‎First printing of Tyndall's famous two-paper series on Spontaneous Generation. The idea was that certain forms such as fleas could arise from inanimate matter such as dust, or that maggots could arise from dead flesh. This idea had been the dominating though for two millenniums until Pasteur in 1859 and Tyndall with the present publication finally laid this theory to rest. ""One might think, then, that the question of spontaneous generation had to be resolved before germ theory could triumphed. It comes as a surprise to discover that germ theory triumphed while the issue of spontaneous generation was still subject to a lively debate. The whole question was only finally solved resolved in 1877, when John Tyndall showed that the outcome of experiments on sealed and heated environments, or on heated environments containing only heated air, depended not on the honesty and good faith, or technical competence and skill, of the experimenter, but on where he happened to conduct the experiment.Since Tyndall, and only since Tyndall, spontaneous generation experiments can be made to work reliably - but Pasteur and Lister had already brought about a revolution in medicine by claiming (mistakenly as it happens) that spontaneous generation had already been disproved."" Il établit la capacité d'absorption calorifique de la vapeur d'eau. Fasciné par la proposition de Louis Agassiz de l'existence dans le passé de période glaciaire il montre que l'acide carbonique (H2CO3) peut absorber une grande quantité de chaleur et que si les gaz comme l'hydrogène, l'oxygène et l'azote sont quasi transparents à la chaleur, la vapeur d'eau joue un rôle important en climatologie. Il arrive à la conclusion que des modifications de la proportion des gaz dans l'atmosphère peuvent jouer un rôle important dans les variations du climat. Il explique la couleur bleu du ciel avec l'effet Tyndall, de nos jours appelé diffusion Rayleigh, Tyndall est le premier à donner une explication de ce phénomène tandis que Rayleigh traite le sujet beaucoup plus précisément et lui fournit un cadre théorique. Après une première étude, parue en 1876 sous le titre The optical deportment of the atmosphere in relation to the phenomena of putrefaction and infection, Tyndall continue ses recherches sur les organismes infectieux et leur résistance à la chaleur. Ainsi, dans la présente publication, il décrit un moyen nouveau de stérilisation (la Tyndallisation) par le biais d'une méthode d'ébouillantage discontinu. Les présents travaux de biologie expérimentale portèrent, avec ceux de Pasteur, le coup de grâce à la théorie de la génération spontanée. Louis Charles Émile Lortet, biologiste, zoologiste et directeur du Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle de Lyon, fit la connaissance de Tyndall dans les années 1860 alors que celui-ci s'adonnait à sa passion pour l'alpinisme, notamment en Suisse. En 1869, Lortet donna, sous le titre "Dans les montagnes", une traduction de deux textes de Tyndall, "Mountaineering in 1861" et "Hours of exercise in the Alps".
