1 vol 8-vo (230 x 145 mm) of : VIII (false title, title, tributes, table) ; 112 pp. ; 1 folding map of Tonkin (partially trimmed). First edition of this very complete study on Tonkin by Henry Thureau. This work appeared in the context of the Franco-Chinese war (1881-1885) which ended with the incident of L?ng Son (March 1885) which was at the origin of the "Tonkin affair", a political crisis which led to the fall of the Ferry government. It takes the form of an argument for the continuation of the French mission of pacification and civilization of Tonkin. However, behind these humanist arguments claiming to want to liberate the Tonkinese people oppressed by the Chinese, it is indeed the multiple riches offered by this region (silk, cotton, precious minerals, green tea, abundant fauna and flora, etc.) that constitute the real argument for the continuation of French actions in Tonkin. This book takes the form of a study of the region, covering its geography, history, politics, explorations, the Red River, the first conquests, etc. This is accompanied by a praise of the outstanding French characters of Tonkin that the author wishes to rehabilitate. The book is dedicated to the memory of Francis Garnier, a naval officer and explorer who died in battle in Hanoi on December 21, 1873, and in honor of Jean Dupuis, an explorer and businessman, a major contributor to this work. The work is completed with a folding map of Tonkin entitled: " The Tong-Kin and the basin of the Red River according to the documents of J. Dupuis " (translated from French). A nice copy, partially trimmed and well preserved in its publisher's paperback.
