2 volumes in-12 (178 × 104 mm) de [4]-ii-398- [2] pp. et [4]-446-[2] pp. ; demi-chagrin aubergine, dos à nerfs ornés de fleurons, filets et pointillés, tranches mouchetées (reliure de l’époque).
Édition originale de la traduction française, peu commune. La première édition anglaise a paru en feuilleton dans le magazine Punch entre 1846 et 1847. L’un des chefs-d’œuvre du roman victorien, par l’écrivain britannique qui fut le grand rival de Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray (Alipur, Calcutta, 1811-Londres, 1863). Dans ce vaste tableau de la société anglaise du xixe siècle, qui procure encore de nos jours « une expérience de lecture prodigieuse », Thackeray « se montre enfin [...] romancier authentique et complet. Tous ses récits précédents avaient un caractère parodique; il les écrivait sous divers déguisements; il n’avait jamais encore été lui-même dans une œuvre de longue haleine. Dans La Foire aux Vanités il apparaît enfin sous son vrai jour et manifeste sa capacité de faire vivre des personnages, d’agencer un récit, de peindre une vaste fresque, enfin, et surtout, d’engager avec le lecteur une conversation ininterrompue qui lui permet d’exprimer ses opinions sur une grande variété de sujets généraux et particuliers » (Sylvère Monod). Quant à la traduction de Georges Guiffrey (1827-1887), elle est encore aujourd’hui la version française de référence de Vanity Fair.
