‎Claude Monet (1840?1926) went to live in the village of Giverny in 1883. The landscape painter swapped his nomadic lifestyle for a reclusive existence, devoting himself completely to painting his impressive garden. He spent years working, isolated and undisturbed, on his magnum opus: a large decorative ensemble depicting the reflections on the surface of his water lily pond. Monet regarded his Grandes D corations as his legacy, and in the course of the project he painted hundreds of canvases that he never sold or exhibited. When Monet died in 1926 he was a celebrated artist, but his paintings from Giverny did not receive a positive reception when they were posthumously revealed. Critics and art historians regarded the water lilies as an inferior element of his oeuvre, the work of a blind old man. This perception eventually changed, thanks in part to an exhibition in 1952 at the current Kunstmuseum Den Haag, which, for the first time, presented Monet?s water lilies as true masterpieces. These paintings have now become Monet?s trademark, and his most beloved work. This lavishly illustrated publication focuses on the period Monet spent in Giverny and on the creation of his final masterwork. It also charts how Monet?s water lilies have been received over the years. With essays by Frouke van Dijke, Astrid Goubert, Marianne Mathieu and Benno Tempel. The exhibition Monet ? ‎Het begin van de negentiende eeuw was een turbulente tijd: de eeuwenlange zekerheden van het Ancien Regime waren nog maar net van de kaart geveegd door de Franse Revolutie en heel Europa kreeg al meteen te maken met de Napoleontische Oorlogen. Er kwamen nieuwe sociale klassen naar voren: de burgerij en de arbeiders. Liberalisme en de Industriele revolutie breken door. Met andere woorden, de hele maatschappij was in sneltreinvaart aan het veranderen. Deze overgang was niet in het minst te voelen in de artistieke wereld. Als reactie op het rationele van de 18e eeuwse verlichting ontstond er een tegenbeweging die nadruk wou leggen op het gevoel, op de mystiek van het verleden, de passie en hartstochten: de Romantiek. Deze reactie is in heel Europa voelbaar maar toch omvat de huidige canon van romantische schilders slechts een handvol namen als William Turner, John Constable, Theodore Gericault of Eugene Delacroix. De volledige romantische schilderkunst uit de Lage Landen is echter langzaam verdwenen uit het collectieve geheugen. De kunstenaars van deze weinig gekende romantische schilderschool muntten uit in techniek en vervaardigden pittoreske en sublieme pareltjes. ‎Voor de tentoonstelling Vrij belangrijke foto's hebben twee Hermans-kenners uit de bijna 15.000 foto's een selectie van tientallen foto's gemaakt, waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is getoond. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. In de tentoonstelling is een mix van vintages afdrukken en nieuwe prints te zien. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar Hermans' archief. In het mapje Vrij belangrijke foto's zat een bonte verzameling van 57 afdrukken: portretten van Hermans zelf, zijn ouders en andere familieleden, vrienden plus foto's van affiches, de Arc de Triomphe, huizen in Wenen en het geboortehuis van Nietzsche. *** Als afsluiting van het 'Hermansjaar' 2021-2022, waarin wordt gevierd dat de Nederlandse schrijver Willem Frederik Hermans honderd jaar geleden werd geboren, presenteert het Fotomuseum Den Haag een expositie ingericht met door hem gemaakte foto's. Gelijktijdig verschijnt Willem Frederik Hermans - Vrij belangrijke foto's met een verse selectie uit zijn fotografi sche oeuvre. Het boek en de tentoonstelling kwamen tot stand onder auspici n van het Willem Frederik Hermans Instituut en met in-stemming van de Erven Hermans. Het in principe gesloten archief-Hermans is daarvoor een malig opengesteld voor de gastconservatoren. In 1957, toen zijn roman De donkere kamer van Damokles niet wilde vlotten, heeft Hermans overwogen zich om te scholen tot fotograaf. Hij kocht een professionele camera, mat zich de firmanaam 'Persfotobedrijf W.F. Hermans' aan en ging in de leer bij Nico Jesse, van wie hij ook een oude Leica overnam. Daarmee sloeg hij fanatiek aan het fotograferen in Groningen, Amsterdam en Parijs. Uiteindelijk kreeg de Leica een sleutelrol in zijn roman. Piet Schreuders en Bram Oostveen bekeken alle 4.500 zwartwitfoto's en 9.829 kleurendia's in het archief-Hermans en maakten een selectie waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is gepubli ceerd. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. Met tekstbijdragen van Wim van Sinderen, conservator van het Fotomuseum Den Haag, Piet Schreuders en W.F. Hermans. In zijn inlei ding plaatst Wim van Sinderen W.F. Hermans in de traditie van de Nederlandse fotografie. Piet Schreuders geeft achtergrondinformatie over de gekozen foto's in het essay 'De verlegen fotograaf' en W.F. Hermans geeft een inkijk in zijn visie op fotografie. Bram Oostveen werkt bij het onderzoeksinstituut Huygens ING en was nauw betrokken bij de totstandkoming van de 24-delige Volledige Werken van Willem Frederik Hermans.‎
