Swinton's tone towards what he calls the country of Scythia is highly conciliatory and almost sycophantic towards Catherine and Peter the Great. He notably castigates Abbé Chappe d'Auteroche for the 'invidious' accounts in his 'Voyage en Sibérie en 1761' (Paris, 1768), a work deplored by Catherine II the Great, and concludes that Russian civilisation was just what might be expected in their present circumstances" (Beatrice Teissier, in: Bill Bell a.o., The Edinburgh History of the Book in Scotland: Enlightenment and expansion (2007), S. 255f.). - Minimale Bräunung und vereinzelte Stockflecken. Besitzstempel "Harmonie in Mannheim" auf Titel verso und Exlibris Franz Pollack-Parnau (1903-1981). Cox I, 186; Nerhood, To Russia and Return (1968), Nr. 123 ("Describes peasant life and land cultivation and charges misunderstanding and bias underlie the account by Chappé d'Auteroche"); Barton, Northern Arcadia (1998), S. 9. ‎
