‎Firts printing of this landmark paper being the first to describe the function of blood in chemical terms. Stokes records the optical spectra of ""cruorine"" (hemoglobin) during the process of respiration and reports two widely different spectra for the oxidised and non oxidised form. He also shows that the spectra are different when the animal part of the product is omitted. He concludes from his experiments that oxygen is weakly bound to the norganic compound of the blood ""cruorine"".""Discovery that oxygen can be removed from haemoglobin by reducing agents."" (Garrison & Morton, No. 872). ‎
