In The Look of Reading, Garrett Stewart esplora secoli di immagini dipinte di lettura, sostenendo che collettivamente costituiscono un genere trascurato nella storia dell'arte. Con interpretazioni innovative del loro lavoro, che vanno dalle Bibbie aperte di Bellini alla carta da giornale mutilata di Bacon, Stewart esamina il rapporto tra il materiale di lettura rappresentato nella pittura e lo “sguardo della lettura” sul volto ritratto. Poi fa risalire questo tipo di interazione dal XVI secolo, quando la lettura raffigurata generalmente illustrava persone che leggevano le sacre scritture, fino a periodi successivi, quando la pittura secolare cominciò a rappresentare l'interiorità e l'assorbimento associati soprattutto alla lettura di romanzi. In definitiva, Stewart mostra come il soggetto sia scomparso del tutto da tali dipinti alla fine del XX secolo, sostituito da parole, scarabocchi e sfocature che mettono lo spettatore al posto del lettore.‎
