En 1771, le Duc de Portland envoya Speechly en Hollande afin que ce dernier compare les méthodes de cultures hollandaises avec les anglaises. Peu de temps après son retour, ses observations furent étudiées, appliquées sur place et décrites dans cet ouvrage.
