Avec Alfred Krupp et Friedrich Bayer, il est l'un des piliers de l« époque des fondateurs ». - En 1843, il conçoit aussi une machine pour garnir les câbles en cuivre d'un revêtement fait avec de la gutta-percha, une gomme issue du latex naturel. Ces câbles lui servent à mettre au point des mines marines actionnables à distance, qu'il fait mouiller au large du port de Kiel pour tenir les navires danois à distance. Il déploiera deux courtes lignes sous-marines du même type, traversant le Rhin et le port de Kiel avec des câbles utilisant cette technologie. - (...) Entre-temps, à la demande des militaires, il commence par poser en 1847 un câble souterrain entre Berlin et la ville de Grossbeeren, dans sa banlieue. Le câble est protégé par la technologie de Siemens. Satisfaite, l'armée lui demande de fonder le 1er octobre, avec Johann Georg Halske la société Telegraphenbauanstalt von Siemens & Halske qui deviendra par la suite l'entreprise Siemens. - (...) En 1866, Werner Siemens établit le principe de la dynamo électrique. L'un de ses professeurs à l'école d'artillerie n'était autre que le physicien Gustav Magnus, à qui Siemens expédia un exemplaire de cette dynamo. Magnus vit tout l'intérêt de cette invention et s'efforça de publier cette découverte, d'abord à Berlin puis à Londres. En 1866, Werner Siemens et ses frères investissent dans un grand projet télégraphique, associant l'Orient à l'Europe, l'Indo-European Telegraph Company. La société doit prolonger le projet de câble de Reuters reliant Lowestoft à l'île allemande de Norderney puis Hanovre et Hambourg et qui affiche une rentabilité de 19 % dès 1868. Via l'Iran, il doit relier Bombay à Londres, en utilisant l'Indo-European Telegraph Company des frères Siemens, qui est très bien valorisée à son entrée en Bourse, avec 450 000 sterling. Les frères Siemens détiennent 20 pour cent de l'entrepise et Paul Julius Reuters est aussi associé. En 1877, Siemens obtient le brevet du haut-parleur électrodynamique26. With previous owner's stamp to lower part of front wrapper: ""A. L. Ternant"". Lacking upper part of spine, a few marginal annotations in pencil throughout. 50, (5) pp. + 3 large folded plates.
First printing of this important publication in the history of telegraphs cables with a most interesting presentation inscription: It was given by Siemens to A. L. Ternant, author to several early paper on submarine cables. The Malta-Alexandria cable was ordered by the British government, manufactured by John Pender, and constitute one of the very first submarine telegraph cables. ""The making and laying of the Malta to Alexandria cable gave rise to researches on the resistance and electrification of insulating materials under pressure, which formed the subject of a paper read before the British association in 1863. The effect of pressure up to 300 atmospheres was observed, and the fact elicited that the inductive capacity of gutta-percha is not affected by increased pressure, whereas that of india-rubber is diminished. The electrical tests employed during the construction of the Malta and Alexandria cable, and the insulation and protection of submarine cables, also formed the subject of a paper [the present]."" (Munro, Heros of the Telegraph, P. 72). The Malta-Alexandria cable was the first Siemens was involved in and the experience made him in 1874: ""design the cable ship Faraday and assisted in the laying of the first of several transatlantic cables that it completed. During the last fifteen years of his life he actively supported the development of the engineering profession and its societies and stimulated public interest in the conservation of fuel, the reduction of air pollution and the potential value of electric power in a wide variety of engineering applications.(DSB).In 1859 Glass, Elliot and Company received an order from the British Government to manufacture and lay a cable from Falmouth, England to Gibraltar. The government then changed the route to Rangoon - Singapore and finally to Malta - Alexandria, Egypt.

""Siemens' outstanding contribution to scientific technology was his discovery of the dynamo principle, announced to the Berlin Academy of Sciences in January 1867. Having already introduced the double-T armature, the electromagnetic field, and the external load of an electrical generator in a single circuit, thereby avoiding the costly permanent magnets previously used in the field. Other inventors and scientists discovered the dynamo principle at about the same time"" but Siemens foresaw the consequences of his ""dynamo"" for heavy-current, or power, uses and developed practical applications. His company pioneered in using electricity for streetcars and mine locomotives, in electrolysis, and in central generating stations."" (DSB)

First appearance of this important issue of The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters' Journal containing some of the most influential Danish contributions to science from the period: - Thomsen's ""Bidrag til et thermochemisk System"" undoubtly being the main contribution by a Dane in chemistry in the 19th Century.The paper from 1852 is famous as it is the first statement of a new thermochemical nomenclatura, and the paper contains the first enunciation of the thermochemical affinity principle, which states that chemical affinity, or the attraction between substances, can be measured by the heat evolved when bodies combine. His fundamental thought was that the evolution of heat accompanying a chemical reaction (which he calls 'varmetoning', equivalent to enthalpy change) is an exact expression of the chemical affinity of the reaction.- Colding's ""Undersøgelse over Vanddampene og deres bevægende Kraft i Dampmaskinen"" being his major contribution to the development of the steam engine.
