Het Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek van 1996 is gewijd aan de kunst van Pieter Brueghel de Oude. Het werk van de zestiende-eeuwse Vlaamse schilder is al door talrijke kunsthistorici onderzocht. Tegenwoordig wordt hij niet langer gezien als een eenvoudig man die op naieve wijze zijn land en zijn volk uitbeeldde. Toch zijn onderzoekers pas onlangs begonnen om de kunstenaar te plaatsen binnen zijn eigen maatschappelijke en intellectuele omgeving. Bovendien hebben zij in de laatste jaren geheel nieuw inzichten ontwikkeld rond bekende Brueghel-thema's als de boerencultuur, de rederijkers, het humanisme en de religieuze en politieke verwikkelingen van zijn tijd. Reden genoeg om Brueghels kunst nog eens opnieuw te bezien vanuit zijn eigen samenleving en cultuur. In het Jaarboek wordt door een internationale groep Brueghel-kenners verslag gedaan van hun jongste bevindingen.
