L'auteur, le minéralogiste allemand Senft (1810-1893), présente sa classification des feldspaths, en fonction de leur propriétés minéralogiques, compositions chimiques et structures. "This is perhaps more of a petrographical work than a mineralogy, but still displays the author's thorough treatment of the subject" (Schuh). L'ouvrage comporte six tableaux de classification et six grands tableaux, dont un rehaussé, démontrant la stratification et la datation des roches découverte en Allemagne et dans les pays voisins. Senft étudia la théologie et les sciences naturelles dans les universités de Iéna et de Göttingen. Il devient professeur, puis membre de l'Académie Léopoldine et de celle d'Erfurt. Based on more than 40 months of field research the author presents, documents and illustrates the Trobriand Islanders' own indigenous typology of text categories or genres, covering the spectrum from ditties children chant while spinning a top, to gossip, songs, tales, and myths. The typology is based on Kilivila metalinguistic terms for these genres, and considers the relationship they have with registers or varieties which are also metalinguistically distinguished by the native speakers of this language.
