A beautiful and informative exploration of the illuminated manuscripts of the Bible over a millennium and across the globe, shedding new light on some of the most significant, yet rarely seen, paintings of the Middle Ages For two millennia the Bible has inspired the creation of extraordinary art. Within this history illuminated biblical manuscripts are among the best tools for understanding early Christian painting and artistic interpretations of the Bible. This extensively illustrated new book, compiled and written by two internationally renowned experts, transports readers, by way of forty-five featured manuscripts, across the globe and through 1,000 years of history. Passing chronologically through many of the major centers of the Christian world, from Constantinople and imperial Aachen to Canterbury, Mozarabic Spain, Crusader Jerusalem, northern Iraq, Paris, London, Bologna, and Rome, Scot McKendrick and Kathleen Doyle shed light on some of the finest but least-known paintings from the Middle Ages, and on the development of art, literature, and civilization as we know it.

UK, Royal Collection , 2010 Holland in the seventeenth century presented artists with the most man-made landscape in Europe, and one which still exerts a timeless fascination on our imaginations today. The human narrative within the painted landscape ranged from peasants working and relaxing in the tradition of Bruegel to an evocation of aristocratic estates. Meanwhile, other Dutch artists were discovering in Italy a range of different subjectmatter, from streetscapes to the Roman campagna. Finally there was the sea, which played a vital role in the Dutch mentality, and which was used to suggest the drama of the nations life and history. This book presents each of these types of landscape, exploring the way they relate to one another, how they stand apart, and how each enables us today to enter the Dutch Golden Age. The Isabella Breviary is considered the greatest treasure of the British Library. Conceived as the most luxurious of all Flemish breviaries, this extraordinary manuscript stands as a masterpiece of late 15th-century illumination. Each page is exquisitely decorated by the finest Flemish painters, resulting in a work of incomparable beauty and refinement. Among its most celebrated miniatures including The Nativity, The Adoration of the Magi, and Saint Barbara are several executed by the renowned hand of Gérard David. Particular distinction must be given to the Isabella Breviary?s exuberant marginal decoration. It displays a rare combination of modern strewn-flower borders and interwoven acanthus leaves and branches, together with a style that was already uncommon around 1490 blue and gold acanthus scrolls richly adorned with flowers, insects, and birds.

This comprehensive and richly illustrated catalogue focuses on the finest illustrated manuscripts produced in Europe during the great epoch in Flemish illumination. During this aesthetically fertile period - beginning in 1467 with the reign of the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold and ending in 1561 with the death of the artist Simon Bening - the art of book painting was raised to a new level of sophistication. Sharing inspiration with the celebrated panel painters of the time, illuminators achieved astonishing innovations in the handling of colour, light, texture, and space, creating a naturalistic style that would dominate tastes throughout Europe for nearly a century. Focusing on the notable artists of the period - Simon Marmion, the Vienna Master of Mary of Burgundy, Gerard David, Gerard Horenbout, Bening, and others - the catalogue examines both devotional and secular manuscript illumination within a broad context: the place of illuminators within the visual arts, including artistic exchange between book painters and panel painters; the role of court patronage and the emergence of personal libraries; and the international appeal of the new Flemish illumination style.
