The Isabella Breviary is considered the greatest treasure of the British Library. Conceived as the most luxurious of all Flemish breviaries, this extraordinary manuscript stands as a masterpiece of late 15th-century illumination. Each page is exquisitely decorated by the finest Flemish painters, resulting in a work of incomparable beauty and refinement. Among its most celebrated miniatures including The Nativity, The Adoration of the Magi, and Saint Barbara are several executed by the renowned hand of G rard David. Particular distinction must be given to the Isabella Breviary?s exuberant marginal decoration. It displays a rare combination of modern strewn-flower borders and interwoven acanthus leaves and branches, together with a style that was already uncommon around 1490 blue and gold acanthus scrolls richly adorned with flowers, insects, and birds.
