‎Première traduction française de la première partie seule de la Universalhistorische Übersicht der alten Welt und ihrer Kultur, qui était parue en 1826. La seconde partie ne vit le jour qu'en 1834, ce qui explique que notre série s'achève avec la période des Diadoques et les premières interventions romaines dans le monde hellénique. Le but de l'ouvrage était de présenter la marche de la civilisation, non seulement chez les nations connues des Grecs et des Romains, mais aussi dans l'Inde et la Chine. Remarqué à l'époque par son ampleur encore inaccoutumée des historiens traditionnels et par son style élégant, l'auteur n'appliquait pas pour autant la critique méthodique des sources déjà développée par Niebuhr.
