Histoire d'un instituteur et pasteur rural qui tente de faire fortune en voyageant, puis en écrivant et illustrant un livre sur ses expériences de lieux pittoresques et insolites. L'humour et l'absurdité des visites du docteur Syntax représentent la saturation de la culture pittoresque et du culte du voyage dans la Grande-Bretagne des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles. Le personnage fut créé par le dessinateur Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), peintre d'histoire, de portraits, aquarelliste, caricaturiste et graveur et mis en vers par l'écrivain William Combe (1742-1823), aventurier anglais, auteur principalement de vers satiriques.Publiée pour la première fois 1809, dans le magazine The Poetical de Rudolph Ackermann sous le titre The Schoolmaster's Tour, puis en 1812 sous forme de livre « à la demande générale ». Les deux autres Tournées, parurent en 1820 et 1821. Provenance : Bibliothèque Hon. John Wayland Leslie (1909-1991), avec ex-libris armorié « Grip Fast » ; Ex-libris armorié : Baldwin « Nil sine labore ».Bel exemplaire parfaitement établi vers 1850. ‎

‎This sketch, which is characterised by the artist's usual spirit when dealing with kindred subjects, represents the situation of a rustic swain, whose philanderings have landed him in the midst of the perplexities of a double dilemma. It is seemingly 'washing day,' and the gallant intruder has effected his admission to court the graces of a pretty maiden, who is thrown into consternation at the risk to which her suitor, by an awkward contretemps, is suddenly exposed. The pair have evidently been disturbed at the moment the lady was engaged in drawing a mug of ale for the refreshment of her admirer ; in the confusion, the tap of the beer barrel is still left running, and all the maid's solicitude is centred in the position of her swain, who has incautiously taken refuge in the copper. A very disagreeable-looking old beldame is kindling a blazing fire in the stove, while a buxom wench is working away at the pump, which is pouring gallons of water into the unlucky Lothario's place of concealment. The youth is hesitating midway between the ordeals of fire or water, and he is struggling to effect his escape from both, at the risk of exposure and its consequences. ‎Très rare ensemble en reliure uniforme des 4 voyages du docteur Syntax illustrés de 3 larges vignettes de titre en couleurs peintes à la main et 97 hors-texte à l'aquatinte peints également à la main (aquarelle et gouache). Edition originale du second tour, du troisième tour, et du dernier volume : The tour through London. Le premier volume a une mention de cinquième édition, sans date, mais certainement publié à la même date que The second tour, en 1820. Ce quatrième volume n'est généralement jamais joint aux trois premiers, on ne le trouve qu'isolément. On remarquera qu'il n'est pas intitulé the fourth tour, mais se trouve comme un nouveau livre à part. Officiellement on considère en effet qu'il y a trois livres qui composent les voyages. On dénombre 30 hors-texte pour le volume I, 24 pour les second et troisième et 19 pour le dernier. Reliure anglaise en plein veau glacé turquoise d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné de 3 caissons décorés de fers en miroir, filets pointillés sur les nerfs, et en coiffes. Pièce de titre de veau rouge, pièces de tomaison de veau noir. Dos devenu vert uniformément. Décolorations vertes sur les plats. Traces de frottement. Quelques rares rousseurs sur un ensemble bien frais. Un feuillet en partie détaché au tome I. Deux feuillets ressortis au tome III. Dans le 4e volume, un manque à la dernière page au coin droit bas.
