Edition originale de ce recueil, fondamental dans la découverte en France de la littérature allemande. Michael Huber propose une traduction de poètes essentiellement contemporains. Huber réagit, comme il l'indique dans son introduction, au mépris dont la poésie allemande était encore l'objet 16 ans auparavant, année de la traduction en français des Poésies de Haller. A l'instar de Grimm, Huber se fait le défenseur et le propagateur de la culture allemande, et cite Bodmer en épigraphe : "Auch Deutsche können sich auf den Parnassus schwingen" ("Les Allemands peuvent également monter jusqu’au Parnasse", image illustrée par le frontispice de Eisen). Les 4 volumes recueillent des pièces très diverses : idylles profanes ou sacrées, pastorales, contes, fables, odes, dithyrambes, hymnes, élégies, chansons, poèmes épiques, etc... d'auteurs nombreux : Schmidt, Breitenbauch, Schlegel, Wieland, Rost, Kleist, Gessner, Hagedorn, Gellert, Lichtwert, Lessing, Gleim, Karsch, Utz, Optiz, etc... Bon état (petit mq. à deux coiffes en queue, très petit mq. à un dos, très petits frott. en reliure, bon exemplaire par ailleurs)
