<p data-mce-fragment="1">Au VIIIe siècle avant notre ère, le pays de Kouch, en Nubie et au-delà, longtemps dominé par l'Égypte, reprend son indépendance. Sa capitale religieuse et politique se situe à Napata, dans la région de la quatrième cataracte du Nil. Nous sommes au cœur du Soudan actuel. C'est de là que surgirent les rois fondateurs de la 25e dynastie égyptienne, guerriers et bâtisseurs, qui unifièrent l'Égypte et le pays de Kouch en un seul vaste royaume s'étendant du delta du Nil jusqu'à la confluence du Nil Blanc et du Nil Bleu.</p><p data-mce-fragment="1">Le plus célèbre de ces pharaons kouchites, cité dans la Bible, est sans conteste Taharqa, digne héritier des grandes figures de l'Ancien et du Moyen Empire, couronné à Memphis « maître des Deux-Terres ». En s'installant sur le trône des pharaons, pourtant, les rois de Kouch héritaient de la menace assyrienne et leurs règnes furent une succession de guerres et de batailles gagnées ou perdues, de sièges de forteresses, de sacs de villes et de déportations...</p><p data-mce-fragment="1">Cet ouvrage somptueux, en même temps qu'il raconte une épopée, révèle une civilisation, celle du royaume napatéen, de ses rois et de ses reines, à travers des œuvres riches et originales : stèles et statues monumentales de granit, statuettes en bronze et or, bijoux royaux et couronnes.
