‎ Seules éditions et premières traductions modernes. Exemplaires corrigés et annotés par le traducteur Frédéric Ritter. Le premier est la traduction du texte le plus célèbre de François Viète, "In artem analyticem isagoge" (1591), dans lequel il établit les symboles algébriques. Le second, les "notes sur la logistique spécieuse" est la traduction de "Ad logiscticen speciosam, notae priores", publié seulement en 1631. Ce sont deux tirés à part du 'Bullettino di bibliografia e di storia delle scienze matematiche et fisiche'. Envoi signé sur les titres : "Ex dono autoris. F. Ritter" et nombreuses notes de sa main, des corrections et des additions. "Ce premier essai de traduction laisse beaucoup à désirer, d'autant plus qu'il a été défiguré en Italie au moment de son impression, sans mon consentement ..." explique Ritter dans une note manuscrite de 5 lignes (la suivante a été sans doute coupée par le relieur). Frédéric Ritter (Guebwiller, 1819 - Pau, 1893) ancien élève de l'École polytechnique, a fait carrière comme Ingénieur des Ponts et Chaussées. Il a passé une grande partie de sa vie "a rétablir cette grande figure du Père de l'algèbre moderne", François Viète. La plupart de ses travaux sur la vie et l'oeuvre de Viète sont resté manuscrits. Seuls des résumés en sont parus dans les revues scientifiques de l'époque. "François Viéte est considéré à juste titre comme l'inventeur de l'algèbre moderne. ... The first is the translation of François Viète's most famous text, "In artem analyticem isagoge" (1591), in which he establishes algebraic symbols. The second one is the translation of "Ad logiscticen speciosam, notae priores", published only in 1631. These are two offprints of the 'Bullettino di bibliografia e di storia delle scienze matematiche et fisiche'. Inscribed on titles: "Ex dono autoris. F. Ritter" and numerous notes in his hand, corrections and additions. "This first attempt at translation leaves much to be desired, especially since it was disfigured in Italy at the time of printing, without my consent..." explains Ritter in a handwritten note of 5 lines (the following one was probably trimmed by the binder). Frédéric Ritter (Guebwiller, 1819 - Pau, 1893), a former student of the École Polytechnique, made a career as a Ponts et Chaussées engineer. He spent a large part of his life "re-establishing the great figure of the Father of modern algebra", François Viète. Most of his works on the life and work of Viète remained in manuscript. Only summaries of them were published in the scientific journals of the period. "François Viéte is rightly considered as the inventor of modern algebra. ... With that discovery, it became clear that visible light represents no more than a fraction of a continous spectrum.A year earlier, in 1800, William Herschel discovered infrared light. This was the first time that a form of light beyond visible light had been detected. After hearing about Herschel's discovery of an invisible form of light beyond the red portion of the spectrum, Ritter decided to conduct experiments to determine if invisible light existed beyond the violet end of the spectrum as well. He had heard that blue light caused a greater reaction in silver chloride than red light did. Ritter decided to measure the rate at which silver chloride reacted to the different colors of light. He directed sunlight through a glass prism to create a spectrum. He then placed silver chloride in each color of the spectrum and found that it showed little change in the red part of the spectrum, but darkened toward the violet end of the spectrum. Johann Ritter then decided to place silver chloride in the area just beyond the violet end of the spectrum, in a region where no sunlight was visible. To his amazement, this region showed the most intense reaction of all. This showed for the first time that an invisible form of light existed beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum.
