‎Exceedingly rare first edition, posthumously published, of Clerke’s sermons. Richard Clerke embarked on his academic journey when he was elected as a fellow at Christ's College in 1583, a role he held for fifteen years. Despite the college's puritan leaning, Richard was a prominent figure among the conformists. This ideological divide led to tensions, prompting Richard Clerke to lodge complaints of bias with Lord Burghley, who served as the university chancellor. This discord eventually escalated, resulting in physical altercations, with Richard being accused of striking George Downame, a Puritan fellow and future bishop. Edmund Barwell, the college master, ultimately found merit in the accusation. However, before any punitive measures could be taken against Clerke, he appealed the matter to the vice-chancellor. The historical records do not provide further details on the outcome of this appeal. By November of 1590, Barwell and the quarreling fellows managed to reconcile. In a sign of reconciliation, Richard Clerke, George Downame, and others signed an agreement stating: ""We, the undersigned, forgive and forget all past injuries and pledge to treat each other with Christian goodwill in our words and actions moving forward."" In 1596, Richard Clerke received a significant honor by being chosen as the Lady Margaret Preacher at the university. The following year, he took on the role of vicar in Minster, located on the Island of Thanet. Later, he assumed the positions of rector in Snargate, Kent (1609), and vicar of Monkton with Birchington, Kent, holding these positions concurrently for the remainder of his life. In 1602, he was appointed as the Six-Preacher at Canterbury Cathedral, a role that brought him to the attention of the king and his fellow clerics. (See kingjamesbibletranslators . org).‎

‎Scholarly appreciation of the Questions and Answers attributed to Anastasios of Sinai (CPG 7746) changed radically in 1969 with the publication by Marcel Richard of his short, but very dense, article, "Les veritables 'Questions et reponses' d'Anastase le Sinaite". By investigating the manuscript tradition Richard was able to establish that the version published by the German Jesuit, Jacob Gretser (1617), represented a revised version of the original and could not be much earlier than the eleventh century, whereas Anastasios had died shortly after 700. Richard further suggested that various other versions had existed before this and had been used by the later compiler, notably a collection of 88 questions. Gretser had also drawn on one of only 15 questions. Richard identified one other collection that seemed indebted to the original. Although Richard was the first to claim that he had discovered the original collection, from the time of Gretser all who had come across "Anastasian" quaestiones et responsiones had been aware that the published collection did not reflect the evidence of the manuscripts. Already in 1575 the French scholar Gentianus Hervet had published a Latin translation of what was in fact the collection of 88 questions. This collection had attracted wide attention because of its presence - in translation - in the Slavonic Izbornik of 1073. The present editor, Joseph A. Munitiz was asked by Richard shortly before his death in 1976 to complete the edition of the original collection. One might have hoped that since 1976, and in particular with the collation of the manuscripts discovered by Richard - for he himself had not drawn up any apparatus criticus for his proposed edition - it would have been possible to establish a text that was reasonably close to that first composed by the monk of Sinai. But it became clear over the years that some uncertainty was likely to remain. The many revisions and adaptations suffered by the original text meant that very few uncontaminated witnesses had slipped through the sieve created by Byzantine librarians and copyists. Only two manuscripts preserving a large proportion of the original collection have survived. Fortunately, a small number of partial manuscripts, and the evidence of the other Collections, allows one to build up a likely text. The haphazard nature of the content of the Original Collection does suggest that the whole collection may have originated after the death of Anastasios. A disciple or group of admirers may have felt that it would be helpful to publish the various questions and answers that had been composed during the author's lifetime and found in a dossier among his papers. At present this Original Collection contains the answers to certain groups of answers (e.g. concerning providence, alms giving, salvation of the non-baptised, wonders and prophecies, sexual ethics, forgiveness of sins), but intercalated among them are isolated problems with no obvious connection (e.g. concerning capital punishment, Paradise, dreams, female infertility). They all fall under the general heading of pastoral theology and are clearly intended to deal with the preoccupations of a lay, rather than a monastic, audience, even if their preservation was ensured by largely monastic compilations. ‎"Le nom de Marthe Richard reste indéfectiblement associé à la fermeture des maisons closes, en 1946. Pourtant, celle qui fut dès lors surnommée la «Veuve qui clôt» a connu une vie trépidante, dont certains épisodes relèvent de l’espionnage. Marthe Betenfeld naît le 15 avril 1889 à Blâmont, en Lorraine, d’un père brasseur et d’une mère domestique. Destinée à devenir couturière, c’est une autre vie qui l’attend : à 16 ans, après deux années chaotiques d’apprentissage, elle est mise par un Italien sur les trottoirs de Nancy, puis se retrouve dans un bordel pour militaires. Interpellée pour racolage puis fichée par la police en août 1905 comme prostituée mineure, elle s’enfuit à Paris où, après avoir soigné une syphilis, elle rencontre en septembre 1907 l’industriel Henri Richer. Avec cet homme riche, qu’elle épouse en 1915, elle devient une respectable bourgeoise, tentant d’effacer les traces de son passé. Sans succès, car elle n’obtient pas, ni en 1908 ni en 1915, sa radiation du fichier des prostituées. Elle mène toutefois grande vie. Son mari lui achète en 1913 un avion et elle est l’une des premières femmes à être titulaire du brevet de pilote. Mais Henri Richer tombe sur le front de Verdun en mai 1916. Veuve, elle déclare vouloir aider la France. Elle est alors engagée par le capitaine Georges Ladoux, chef du Service de centralisation des renseignements (SCR, service de contre-espionnage) du 5e bureau, qui voit dans les soubresauts de sa prime jeunesse un potentiel pour l’action. Il lui confie une mission en Espagne auprès de Hans von Krohn, capitaine de corvette de l’état-major de la marine impériale et attaché naval allemand à Madrid, dont elle fait son amant. Elle devient alors plus ou moins agent double, à la façon de Mata Hari qu’elle fréquente dans la capitale espagnole. Les missions qui lui sont confiées sont mineures et elle finit par «se faire griller» au bout de seulement quelques mois. Elle a, en effet, un accident de voiture en compagnie de l’attaché naval allemand, accident qui attire l’attention de la presse française. Le 2 août 1917, le journal “La Croix” la cite ainsi dans un article intitulé «L’espionnage en automobile – Un accident intéressant». Sa carrière d’agent révélée, elle doit rentrer en France où elle découvre que son nom est rayé des rôles du service. Fin d’une piteuse carrière d’espionne. Pourtant, en 1930, Ladoux, se souvenant de Marthe, a l’idée d’écrire un roman intitulé “Marthe Richard, une espionne au service de la France”. C’est à cette date qu’elle adopte le patronyme de Marthe Richard, déformation grossière du nom de son défunt mari «Richer». Ce livre n’est qu’une suite de faits complètement inventés, sortis de l’imagination du capitaine, qui n’a d’ailleurs jamais prétendu autre chose. Il lui invente, par exemple, un père militaire, hussard vétéran de la guerre de 1870 habitant Nancy. Affublée du surnom d’«Alouette», il la place dans des situations rocambolesques... Mais Marthe s’émeut de ce succès. Plutôt que de faire rétablir les faits, elle publie un autre livre, “Ma vie d’espionne au service de la France”, qui en rajoute encore dans l’affabulation. Elle raconte, par exemple, que ses parents ont été fusillés par les Allemands au début de la guerre. Peu importe la vérité, le public adhère : sa popularité est immense et, en 1933, le président du Conseil Édouard Herriot, l’un de ses amants supposés, lui fait même avoir la Légion d’honneur pour services signalés rendus aux intérêts français! Elle complète la fable en 1939 avec la publication de “Mes dernières missions secrètes – Espagne 1936-1938”. Marthe Richard s’est évertuée toute sa vie à créer sa propre légende, mêlant sans cesse mensonges et vérités. Edwige Feuillère l’interprète au cinéma, en 1937, face à Erich von Stroheim, dans un film à succès reprenant le titre de Ladoux : “Marthe Richard, une espionne au service de la France”. Elle ne cessera jamais d’entretenir le mythe : en 1974, elle sort un ultime livre titré “Mon destin de femme”, dans lequel elle se forge un passé de grande résistante pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, alors même qu’elle a séjourné de juin 1940 à décembre 1942 à Vichy, puis à Paris où elle s’est rapprochée de certains membres de la Gestapo, adoptant un comportement pour le moins équivoque. En 1971, Charles Chenevier, ancien sous-directeur de la Police judiciaire, dénoncera les mystifications de Marthe Richard relatives à son passé d’aviatrice, d’espionne et de résistante dans un livre dans lequel il écrit, ni plus ni moins, qu’elle «a triché, a menti, a usurpé gloire et notoriété». Elle donne pourtant jusqu’au soir de son existence des conférences sur sa «vie d’espionne», aujourd’hui oubliée tant les faits sont ténus ou inexistants dans les archives militaires. Marthe Richard meurt à presque 93 ans, en février 1982, à son domicile, son nom définitivement associé en revanche, en raison de la campagne de presse très efficace qu’elle avait menée, à la loi sur la fermeture des 1.400 «maisons de tolérance»."
