The Philippine Islands is a historically significant book written by Ramon Reyes Lala, first published in 1899. It holds the distinction of being the first English-language book written by a Filipino author to be published in the United States. Born in Manila in 1857, Ramon Reyes Lala was an educated Filipino cultural interpreter who studied in Europe and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1896. He traveled extensively on the American lecture circuit to educate the Western public about the Philippines
