Leipzig Verlag von Bernhard Schlicke 1879 Réimpression - Onzième édition. « Auch ein Todtentanz » (Une autre danse macabre) d'Alfred Rethel est une série de six gravures sur bois réalisées en 1848, accompagnées d'un texte explicatif de Robert Reinick, critiquant les révolutions européennes de cette année-là. L'uvre s'inspire des motifs médiévaux de la danse macabre, comme ceux de Hans Holbein, mais satirise la ferveur révolutionnaire en représentant la Mort comme une figure révolutionnaire incitant au chaos. Cet exemplaire est une impression ultérieure, peut-être réimprimée en vue de la guerre franco-prussienne (alors récente) et des troubles qui s'ensuivirent. Portfolio original à couverture rigide avec dos et coins en buckram. Titres en noir. Légèrement taché et noirci, mais en bon état et conservant les attaches en tissu d'origine. Ex-libris du propriétaire à l'intérieur de la couverture avant. Page de titre et feuille de poésie, suivies de quatre pages de préface de Johannes Proelk. Celles-ci sont légèrement roussies. Viennent ensuite les six planches gravées détachées. Le tout en très bon état, avec seulement quelques légères traces d'usure sur les bords. Un ouvrage rare. Réalisé à l'Academic Studio for Woodcutting Art de Dresde sous la direction du professeur H. Bürkner. La dernière planche a été imprimée par Gaber. Reprint - Eleventh edition. Alfred Rethel's "Auch ein Todtentanz" (Also a Dance of Death) is a series of six wood engravings created in 1848, with explanatory text by Robert Reinick, critiquing the European revolutions of that year. The work draws on medieval Dance of Death motifs like those of Hans Holbein but satirizes revolutionary fervor, portraying Death as a revolutionary figure inciting chaos. This copy is a later printing, perhaps reprinted with a view to the (then recent) Franco-Prussian war and ensuing turmoil. Original hardback portfolio with buckram spine and corners. Black titles. Somewhat stained and darkened, but sound and retaining the original cloth ties. Owner's bookplate to the inside front board. Title page and a leaf of poetry, followed by four pages of preface by Johannes Proelk. These are slightly foxed. Then are the six loose engraved plates. All in very good condition with a little edgewear only. An uncommon work. Produced at the Academic Studio for Woodcutting Art in Dresden under the direction of Professor H. Bürkner.
