First edition of this important account of Polynesian life by William Thomas Pritchard (1829-1907), British consul, traveller and observer of the Pacific world. Born in Tahiti, son of the missionary and British consul George Pritchard, William Thomas Pritchard spent much of his life among the island societies of the South Pacific. He acquired a deep knowledge of Polynesian languages, customs and political structures, and was appointed the first British consul to Fiji in 1858. Né à Tahiti, fils du missionnaire et consul britannique George Pritchard, l'auteur passa une grande partie de sa vie dans le Pacifique et acquit une connaissance exceptionnelle des langues, des traditions et des sociétés polynésiennes.
