The Institute of Literature and Linguistics of Cuba is named in his honor. In 1960, he was appointed as Cuba's ambassador to Mexico. He was elected as its vice president at the first Congress of Writers and Artists of Cuba and wrote the preface to El pensamiento vivo de Maceo. In 1962, he was appointed as the rector of the Universidad de Oriente and traveled extensively to various political and cultural events. In 1965, he became the director of the newly created Institute of Literature and Linguistics in Havana. In 1986, he received the National Literature Prize. His work mainly explores issues of poetics and aesthetics, social literature, and the history of Cuban literature from a Marxist-Leninist perspective.
