‎«Contrairement à d’autres portraits de Le Gray où l’on remarque un revêtement de sol à motif, ici le sol qui semble être de chanvre lissé, détérioré, donne à cette image un curieux contraste entre l’officier élégant et la pauvreté intrigante du décor.»‎
