Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie (1853-1942), plus connu sous le nom de Flinders Petrie, était un égyptologue anglais et un pionnier de la méthodologie systématique en archéologie et de la préservation des artefacts. Il a occupé la première chaire d'égyptologie au Royaume-Uni et a fouillé un grand nombre des sites archéologiques les plus importants d'Égypte avec sa femme, Hilda Petrie. Certains considèrent que sa découverte la plus célèbre est celle de la stèle de Merneptah.
