‎Erste Ausgabe dieses geographischen Standardwerkes, die G. Leitpoldt aufgrund der Materialien heraugab, die O. Peschel (1826-1875) zusammengetragen bzw. niedergeschrieben hatte. Die zweite letzte Auflage erschien 1883-1885. Der Geographieprofessor Oscar Peschel machte sich um die Geschichte der Geographie verdient, betonte stärker deren naturwissenschaftliche Seite und wurde zu einem der Wegbereiter der Geomorphologie.
