Het jaar is 1937. De 42 jarige Hongaarse beeldhouwer Arthur Fleischmann kwam vanaf Java via een kleine zeilboot aan op Bali. Een nieuw en exotisch hoofdstuk opende zich voor hem. Bewapend met een 35 mm Dolina camera en een gevoelig oog van een artiest, legde hij het leven, gewoontes en schoonheid van het Balinese volk vast in meer dan 1800 foto's. Als de dreiging van de oorlog in de Pacific er niet geweest was, zou hij voor de rest van zijn leven gebleven zijn op het mooie en rustige paradijs. Zich bezig houdend met beeldhouwen an fotograferen van de gracieuze jonge tempel dansers die zijn muzen werden. In plaats daarvan ontsnapte hij naar Australie waar hij een manuscript schreef ten geleide van zijn Balinese foto's.
