‎Eine Theorie der Grundlagen der Thermodynamik"‎

‎Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1903. Contemp. hcloth. Handwritten paperlabel on spine. In: ""Annalen der Physik. Vierte Folge. Band 11. Herausgegeben von Paul Drude."". VIII,1144pp. and 6 plates. (Entire volume offered). The Einstein paper: pp. 170-187. Faint signs of dampstains in outer margins on a few leaves.‎

‎First edition of Einsteins fourth paper. In his paper from 1902, Einstein ""says in his introduction that nobody has yet succeeded in deriving the conditions of thermal equilibrium and of the second law of thermodynamics from probability considerations, although Maxwell and Boltzmann came near to it. Willard Gibbs is not mentioned. In fact, Einstein's paper was written in ignorance of Gibbs paper published 1901. In the present paper, Einstein builds the theory on another basis not used by Gibbs, namely on the consideration of a single system in course of time (later called ""Zeit-Gesamtheit"", time assembly), and proves that this is equivalent to a certain virtual assembly of many systems, Gibb's micro-canonical assembly...Einstein at once proceeded to apply his theorems to a case of utmost importance, namely to systems of a size suited for demonstrating the reality of molecules and the correctness of the kinetic theory of matter.""(Walter Alicke). ‎"LEGRAY, GUSTAVE. - THE INVENTION OF THE WAXED-PAPER PROCESS IN PHOTOGRAPHY.‎

Reference : 49595

(1851)

‎Note sur un nouveau mode de préparation du papier photographique négatif. (Séance du Lundi 8 December 1851).‎

‎(Paris, Bachelier), 1851. 4to. Without wrappers. In ""Comptes rendus hebdomadaires des séances de l’Académie des sciences"", Vol. 33, No 23. Pp. (631-) 648. (Entire issue offered). Legray's paper: pp. 643-644. Clean and fine.‎

‎First printing of a landmark paper in photography, introducing his invention of the waxed-paper process.""Gustave Legray brought photograpy on paper to its culmination in the 1850s with the waxed-paper process. A struggling young artist..., Legray abandoned painting for photography around 1848, and with the financial backing of the Comte de Briges opened a portrai studio on the top floor of the same house as the Bisson brothers, in the Madelaine district. His reputation, however, was made not in the field of portraiture but as an architectural and landscape photographer. He also taught photography and ""nearly all renowned photographers of the day have been his pupils"". Legray devoted a good deal of time to experiments and wrote a number of manuals. His invention of the waxed-paper proces dates to before 25 Febr. 1851, but the manipulation was not published until the following December (the paper offered)..... The wxed-paper process was far more than a modification of the calotype, as can be seen from the substances used in oidizing paper - rice water, sugar of milk, iodide of potassium, cyanide of potassium, fluoride of potassium (to which was later added white honey and the white of some egg). Sensitizing was done with an acid solution of nitrate of silver and development took place with gallic acid.... The process took its name from the fact that the paper was waxed before iodizing, instead of merely after exposure, to facilitate printing."" (Helmut E. R. K. Gernsheim). ‎

Reference : 42840

(1844)

‎On a General Method in Analysis. Received January 12th,- Read January 18th.‎

‎(London, Richard and John E. Taylor, 1844). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions"" 1844 - Part II. Pp. 225-282. Clean and fine.‎

‎First appearance of Boole's main paper on the Calculus.George Boole is mostly known for his ""An Investigation on the Laws of Thought"" 1854 and his developments of a form of symbolic logic, called Boolean Algebra. But he also did importent work on the Calculus, Differential Equations and the Theory of probabilities. In 1843 the schoolmaster Boole finished a lengthy paper on differential equations, combining an exponential substitution and variation of parameters with the separation of symbols method. The paper was too long for the Cambridge Mathematical Journal. Gregory, and later De Morgan, encouraged him to submit it to the Royal Society. The first referee rejected Boole's paper, but the second recommended it for the Gold Medal for the best mathematical paper written in the years 1841 - 1844, and this recommendation was accepted. In 1844 the Royal Society published Boole's paper (the paper offered), and awarded him the Gold Medal, the first Gold Medal awarded by the Society to a mathematician. ‎

‎First apperance, but together with the publication in Liebig's Annalen the same year, of Wöhler and Liebig's milestone paper in which they brought order to the complexity of organic compounds. The paper was followed with berzelius' letter in which he praised the authors for their remarkable work and he indicates how their compounds could be represented by formulas. The paper initiated a search for common radicals in other organic compounds from chemists all over the world.""The first significent step in finding the order behind the bewildering complexity of organic compounds was made by Wöhler and Liebig in their joint researc on benzaldehyde (oil of bitter almonds) and its derivatives. Here for the first time it was clealy seen that a group of atoms could remain intact throughout a series of reactions and function as a whole - as a radical..... Gay-Lussac's researches on cyanogen confirmed the possibility of the existence of organic radicals, but they first became really significant with the this study of Wöhler and Liebig."" ‎A Geneve, Biblioth. Britannique, AN VI (1798). 8vo. Contemp. marbled boards. Paperlabel with handwritten volume- title on spine. Boards rubbed. In: ""Bibliotheque Britannique"", Tome Dixieme. Sciences et Arts. Lower right corner of title-page torn away, only loss of paper, no loss of letters. Entire volume offered. 384 pp., 3 engraved plates, 6 folded tables. Internally clean and fine, printed on good paper. Hall's paper: pp. 62-76.‎

‎First printing of this fundamental paper in vulcanology, explaining the occurrences of basalts. This French version published at the same time as the English from Nicholson's Journal, vol. 2, pp. 285-88 (the English version being only an abstract of a paper wich was published in full in1805).""James Hall demonstrates experimentally that lavas when cooled quickly can be fused into glass, which then, if remelted and cooled slowly, can transform back into a more stony substance. He thereby offers an explanation for the occurrence in some dykes of a vitreous outer portion in contact with the surrounding rock (the rock having been relatively cold as the original lava rose into it, hence causing rapid cooling) and a more crystalline structure in the central portions."" ‎"CHENEVIX, RICHARD. - A PAPER CAUSING A SCANDAL.‎

Reference : 42943

(1803)

‎Enquiries concerning the Nature of a metallic Substance lately sold in London, as a new Metal, under the Title of Palladium. read May 12, 1803.‎

‎(London, W. Bulmer and Co., 1803). 4to. No wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions"" 1803 - Part II. Pp.290-320. A few faint brownspots to margins.‎

‎First printing of this controversial paper in the history of chemistry.""In 1803 an anonymous handbill was circulated among British scientists. It announced the isolation of a new chemical element, palladium or ""new silver"", and offered the metal for sale. Chenevix, believing the announcement to be a fraud, purchased the whole stock. He set about analyzing it with the preconceived notion that it was an alloy of platinum and mercury. After a series of laborious experiments, he concluded that palladium was in fact an amalgam of platinum made in some peculier way. His report to the Royal Society (the paper offered) caused a sensation. Not long after, Wollaston read to the society a paper in which he declared himself the author of the handbill and the discoverer of two new elements in crude platinum ore - namely, palladium and rhodium. About 1804, with his scientific reputation badly damaged, Chenevix left England and went to France, where he lived for the remainder of his life.""(DSB III, p. 232).A paper by Thomas Andrew Knight is printed together with Chenevix' paper: ""Account of some Experiments on the Sescent of the Sap in Trees."", pp. 277-289 a. 1 engraved plate.‎

‎"LAVOISIER, (ANTOINE-LAURENT). - EMBODYING LAVOISIER'S QUANTITATIVE METHOD, HIS FIRST PAPER.‎

Reference : 44940

(1768)

‎Analyse du Gypse. (1765).‎

‎Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1768. 4to. Extract from ""Mémoires fe Mathematique et de Physique, Présentés à l'Academie des Sciences par divers Savans"", Tome V. With tittlepage to vol. 5. Pp. 341-357. Clean and fine.‎

‎First appearance of Lavoisier's FIRST PUBLISHED CHEMICAL PAPER introducing quantitative methods in chemistry, and in which he for the first time brought a hydrometer in use to measure the specific gravities of components of a chemical solutions. Lavoisier defended the originality of his approach in the following words: ""It is to the art of combination that the knowledge of the specific gravities of fluids can bring most light. This aspect of chemistry is much less advanced than we thought, we possess barely the rudiments of it."" ""This first paper, which in so many respects embodies the quantitative methods Lavoisier was to employ in his later work, had in fact been largely anticipated by others, notably by Marggraf, who had already discovered the composition of gypsum and shown that it contained water (phlegm). Yet Lavoisier’s work was more through" and his paper, his first contribution to the Academy of Sciences (read to the Academy on 25 February 1765), appeared in 1768. (The paper offered). - Lavoisier’s earliest chemical investigation, his study of gypsum, was mineralogical in character" begun in the autumn of 1764, it was intended as the first paper in a series devoted to the analysis of mineral substances. This systematic inventory was to be carried out, not by the method of J. H. Pott ""who exposed minerals to the action of fire"" but by reactions in solution, by the ""wet way."" ""I have tried to copy nature,"" Lavoisier wrote. ""Water, this almost universal solvent ""is the cheif agent she employs"" it is also the one I have adopted in my work."" Using a hydrometer, he determined with the care the solubility of different samples of gypsum (samples of selenite, or lapis specularis, some supplied by Guettard and Rouelle). He made similar measurements with calcined gypsum(plaster of paris). Analysis convinced him that this gypsum was a neutral salt, a compound of vitriolic (sulfuric) acid and a calcareous or chalky base. Not content with having shown by analysis the composition of the gypsum, Lavoisier completed his proof by a synthesis following, as he said, the way that nature had formed the gypsum. He further demonstrated that gypsum, when transformed by strong heating into plaster of Paris, gives off a vapor, which he showed to be pure water, making up about a quarter of the weight of gypsum. Conversely, when plaster of Paris is mixed with water and turns into a solid mass, it avidly combines with water. Using the expression first coined by Rouelle, he called this the ""water of crystallization."" (DSB).Partington III, pp. 378-79. - ‎

‎First appearance of this milestone paper which represents the first, and most importent, step towards his great work laid down in ""Über die Erhaltung der Kraft"", 1847. This is Helmholtz' FIRST PAPER ON THE CONSERVATION OF FORCE""At the beginning of October, 1846, Helnmholtz sent a 'Report on Work done on the Theory of Animal Heat for 1845', at du Bois' request, to the ""Fortschritte der Physik"", issued by the Physical Society. (the paper offered). This was merely an abstract from the article in the Encyclopaedic Dictionary.....BUT IT ANTICIPATES MORE DEFINITELY THE CONDCLUSIONS OF HIS GREAT WORK. He states without hesitation that the material theory of heat is no longer tenable, and that a kinetic theory must be substituted for it, since heat originates in mechanical forces, either directly by friction, or indirectly from an electrical current produced by themotion of magnets. This conception of heat as a motion involves the conclusion that mechanical, electrical and chemical forces must always be the definite equivalent of one and the same energy, whatever the mode by which one force is transformed into another. The empirical confirmation of this law must be the imperative duty of physicists and physiologists.""(Leo Koenigsberger in ""Hermann von Helmholtz"", pp. 34-35).""In the ""Fortschritte der Physik"" for 1845, which appeared in 1847, Helmholtz published a report on theories of physiological heat which he later acknowledged as belonging to his work on the conversation of force.""(Jungnickel & McCormach ""Intellectual Masteryof Nature, Vol. 1, p. 157).‎
