First edition of Overhauser's seminal paper on dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) today known as The Overhauser Effect or Nuclear Overhauser effect.Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is an important technique for the determination of structures in material science and structural biology. For liquid-state NMR the only DNP mechanism currently known is the Overhauser Effect. For solid-state a variety of different DNP-mechanisms can be used such as the thermal-mixing, cross-effect or the solid-effect.
