By publishing the magazine, Freud wanted to establish psychoanalysis as a way of seeing and thinking that also plays a role outside of medicine in understanding culture and society and in the arts. The magazine achieved this goal through both the choice of topics and the selection of authors. In addition to doctors, psychologists and lay analysts, these also included theologians, sociologists, anthropologists, philosophers, cultural scientists and writers.[3] The magazine was aimed at both specialist audiences and interested laypeople and became the publisher's most successful medium until the publisher was dissolved due to the influence of the National Socialists. The magazine was continued in 1939 by Hanns Sachs and with the collaboration of Anna Freud in the USA under the name American Imago and by merging it with the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, which is still published quarterly today.[4] The changing subtitles show the shift in the focus or interest of the editors: the years up to 1926 had the addition of Journal for the Application of Psychoanalysis to the Humanities, and from 1927 to 1932 the subtitle was: Journal for the Application of Psychoanalysis to the Natural and Natural Sciences Humanities and, from 1933, journal for psychoanalytic psychology, its border areas and applications. From 1933 onwards there was a section of literature reviews in which, in addition to psychoanalytic specialist literature, a wide range of works from the border areas were also included. In addition to the three editors themselves, the international authors included Karl Abraham, Alice and Michael, Willy Bardas, Marie Bonaparte, Max Deri, Helene Deutsch, Sándor Ferenczi, Otto Fenichel, Eduard Hitschmann, Hermine Hug-Hellmuth, Ernest Jones, Ernst Kris, René Laforgue, Thomas Mann, Oskar Pfister, Hans Prinzhorn, Theodor Reik, Lou Andreas-Salomé, Herbert Silberer, Sabina Spielrein, René Spitz, Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham, Nelly Wolffheim, Hans Zulliger and Stefan Zweig. bimonthly magazine, complete volume of year 1914, six parts hard cover With gilded titles on the spine, 24,5 x 18 cm,544 pp lightly faded spines, minor shelf wear, all are in fine condition, no internal markings, pages clean, binding firm Overall a very good complete set ‎

‎VAENI, Othonis, [Venius, Otto], [VEEN, Otto Van], HORACE‎

Reference : 4560

(1684)

[xvi], 207, [ix]. pages. 103 planches gravées (complètes). Conforme à WorldCat / OCLC: 9052973779. 210 by 115mm. (Wikipedia).‎

‎Contemporary (or near) full leather binding with gilt decoration to the spine. Second edition (after the first Antwerp edition of 1608). A note to the front end paper in English states that this is a large paper copy. There are certainly good margins, and the Worldcat listings seem to suggest a book of 17cm. Ours is 21cm. So this is probably correct. Engraved title page with the bust of Horace by Lairesse. Title page in red and black with a woodcut vignette. Dedication leaves in Latin. Forward (In Dutch) by Antoni Jansen van TerGoss. The emblems themselves all on the recto pages, with Dutch text beneath and Latin, German and French facing each engraving. [xvi], 207, [ix]. pages. 103 engraved plates (complete). Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 905297377. 210 by 115mm (8Œ by 4œ inches). Condition: The binding is in slightly rubbed condition. A little bumping to the corners. Cracking to the front hinge. The title label is largely lost. Still holding well and an attractive binding. The front end paper is somewhat weak. The rear end paper has a small hole, and a red ink stain to it. There is also an ink inscription in Latin stating that the book was given to the owner by his good friend Coenraad van Beuningen. (1622-1693). He was the Dutch Republic's most experienced diplomat, burgomaster of Amsterdam, and from 1681 a Dutch East India Company director. He probably was bipolar, becoming unstable after the loss of his fortune in 1688. The pages of the work itself are overall in good, clean condition. There is a touch of darkening, and some small old repairs to the pages. There are a few closed tears and a couple of areas of small loss. None of these issues affect text or plates. A scarce work by Otto Van Veen depicting moral scenes, memento mori, teachings on nature and the destiny of man. plates were cut by C. Boel, C. Galle and P. de Jode. Otto van Veen, also known by his Latinized names Otto Venius or Octavius Vaenius (1556-1629), was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist active primarily in Antwerp and Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, He also designed several emblem books, and was for several years the teacher of Rubens. His role as a classically educated humanist artist (a pictor doctus), was influential on the young Rubens, who would take on that role himself. (Wikipedia). .‎
