Unpublished autograph manuscript in Danish comprising a detailed autobiographical account of the author’s life within Freemasonry, beginning with his initiation in 1819. Written in Danish, the text records lodge experiences, relations with fellow lodge-brothers and the moral and spiritual development he experienced with the Order. Manuscript accounts of Freemasonry of this length and personal character - and especially with an identifiable character as here - are scarce and are rarely found in the trade Carl Otto (1795–1879) was Danish physician and prominent advocate of phrenology. Educated in Copenhagen, he studied in Paris, where he adopted the then controversial doctrine of phrenology.Alongside his medical career and university teachings Carl Otto was deeply engaged in Freemasonry. After he retired he devoted himself to literary work, including autobiographical writings (including the present) and continued Masonic involvement.
