‎Summary Henry of Rheinfelden, a Dominican from Basel, spent the last decade of the fourteenth century at the University of Vienna studying theology. During this time he took notes on the academic activities of the first rectors of the university and deans of the Faculties of Arts and Theology. This volume explores Rheinfelden's contribution to our understanding of the doctrinal, curricular, administrative, and prosopographical history of the early University of Vienna. Deciphering Rheinfelden's surviving notebooks in the Universitätsbibliothek Basel sheds new light on the rise of an academic elite in Vienna. His manuscripts reveal a network of scholars sharing a passion for knowledge and supply a gallery of intellectual profiles, starting with the mentors of the group, Henry of Langenstein and Henry Totting of Oyta, and continuing with the lesser-known figures Stephen of Enzersdorf, Gerhard Vischpekch of Osnabrück, Paul (Fabri) of Geldern, Andreas of Langenstein, Rutger Dole of Roermond, Nicholas of Hönhartzkirchen, Nicholas of Dinkelsbühl, John Berwart of Villingen, John Stadel of Russbach, Peter de Treysa, Michael Suchenschatz of Hausleiten, Peter Schad of Walse, Thomas of Cleves, and Leonhard of Dorffen. The papers gathered in this volume highlight the intricate relationship between a commitment to administrative duty and an appetite for the creation of a doctrinal tradition via debating, forging arguments, defending and attacking positions, commenting on authorities, and adopting and adapting academic practices imported from Paris, since the majority of the authors in our gallery were educated in Paris and built their careers in Vienna. Through Rheinfelden's notebooks, this volume provides access to unique and previously unknown texts that together offer a new image of the medieval University of Vienna. ‎Cistercian James of Eltville ( 1393) Author in Paris and Authority in Vienna‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2019 Paperback VIII+501 p., 5 b/w ill., 25 b/w tables, 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English . ISBN 9782503581880.‎

‎From Paris to Vienna, from author to authority, this book tells the story of the intellectual journey of the Cistercian James of Eltville, who lectured on the Sentences at Paris in 1369-1370. With the support of the ERC-Starting Grant THESIS, a team of young scholars honed their skills in palaeography and immersed themselves in medieval philosophy and theology in the company of Eltville?s 25 surviving manuscripts. The results of their labor, curiosity and passion are gathered in this volume, which describes how Eltville developed the thought of earlier fourteenth-century theologians, such as John of Mirecourt, Gregory of Rimini, Thomas of Strasbourg, Alfonsus Vargas of Toledo, and John Hiltalingen of Basel, and passed on his synthesis to later generations of scholars. It fills a major gap in the current historiography of a relatively neglected period in intellectual history. ‎Lectura in libros Sententiarum I. Principium, Questiones 1-6‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, cxxxii + 376 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:6 tables b/w., Language(s):Latin, English. ISBN 9782503607252.‎

‎Summary This is the first critical edition of a major theological work by a Cistercian from a medieval university: the questions on book I of the Sentences by James of Eltville (Jacobus de Altavilla, d. 1392), monk and later abbot of the majestic Eberbach Abbey, the filming location of many of the scenes in The Name of the Rose. The product of bachelor lectures delivered in 1369-1370 at the magnificent Bernardins in Paris just south of Notre-Dame across the Seine, James' Lectura in libros Sententiarum survives in almost two dozen manuscripts. Based on a complete collation of all the witnesses, the editio princeps provides access to a text that illuminates a relatively dark period in the history of scholasticism, portrays the status quaestionis on many issues in philosophical theology between the Black Death and the Great Schism, and illustrates the importance of later-medieval Cistercian theologians and their symbiotic relationship with the Augustinian Hermits who dominated the field from the 1330s to the 1370s. Through the exodus of German scholars from Paris after the outbreak of the Schism, James of Eltville's ideas spread to the new faculties of theology founded in Germanic lands where they exerted a profound influence.
