Albert Schweitzer a été très controversé, déjà de son vivant. Ses admirateurs ont vu en lui un homme qui a tout abandonné pour partir en Afrique et donner sa vie aux Africains. Ils le considéraient comme une sorte de « saint » protestant, comme un grand-père apaisant. Au contraire, ses détracteurs le considéraient comme un paternaliste, un colonialiste. Dans les années 1960, Gerald McKnight, un journaliste américain, a passé un peu de temps à Lambaréné et a écrit ensuite un livre très critique à l’encontre du docteur Schweitzer...
