‎Troisième et dernière version, augmentée, de l'atlas de Quadt, contenant 6 cartes relatives aux Amériques. Matthias Quadt (1557-1613) était un contemporain plus jeune de Mercator, Ortelius et Eitzing. Comme Mercator, il était l'un des rares à être capable de graver ses propres cartes. La version originale, « Europae totius terrarum orbis partis praestantissimae », a été imprimée en 1596 avec 67 cartes. En 1600 Quadt a publié une version augmentée avec 15 nouvelles cartes sous le titre « Geographisch Handbuch ». Le présent ouvrage est encore augmenté de 5 nouvelles cartes: la numéro 4 (Barbaria), la 32 (Thuringe), le 34 (Lunaeburgensis Ducatus), la 64b (Neopolitanum Regnum) et la 65 (Mediolanensis Ducatus). Toutes sont inspirées d'Ortelius, comme la page de titre, qui est tirée de la même planche que le titre du « Geographisch Handbuch. « Une autre école florissante de cartographie a été centrée à Cologne, les travaux de Braun et Hogenberg, Quad et Vopel ajoutant un lustre à sa renommée » (Tooley). (Old restorations to the spine, corners and title, dirt, some slightly scorched leaves of text). Third and final version of Matthias Quadt's printed atlas, containing 6 maps related to the Americas. Matthias Quadt was a younger contemporary of Mercator, Ortelius, and Eitzing, and like Mercator was one of the few who was able to engrave his own maps. The original version, Europae totius terrarum orbis partis praestantissimae, was printed in 1596 with 67 maps. In 1600 Quadt issued an augmented version with fifteen new maps under the title Geographisch Handbuch. The present work is again augmented with five new maps: number 4 (Barbaria), 32 (Thuringia), 34 (Lunaeburgensis Ducatus), 64b (Neopolitanum Regnum) and 65 (Mediolanensis Ducatus). All are based on Ortelius, as is the title-page, which is from the same plate as the title in the Geographisch Handbuch. Another flourishing school of cartography was centered in Cologne, the works of Braun and Hogenberg, Quad and Vopel adding a lustre to its fame (Tooley). In 1592 the engraver Matthias Quad had his first quarto atlas, Europae Descriptio, published in Cologne by Johann Bussemacher. This atlas of Europe contained 50-54 maps, and was republished in 1594 and 1596. A few years later it was expanded to cover the whole world, and published in 1600 as Geographisch Handtbuch, with 82 maps, and in 1608 as Fasciculus Geographicus, with 86 maps. Fine copy, nicely bound and in original colors.‎

Nous joignons aussi les réponses de ce correspondant. Première édition de cette oeuvre populaire de musique liturgique de l'archevêque de Malines, Matthias Hovius (1542-1620), qui sera rééditée jusqu'au XIXe siècle. Il fournit la musique et les paroles correspondantes pour le chant choral liturgique. ‎

‎Matthijs Van Hove, dit Matthias Hovius, né à Malines en 1542 et mort à abbaye d'Affligem le 30 mai 1620, était un prélat. Matthias Hovius est le vicaire général de l'archevêque de Malines Jean Hauchin jusqu'au décès de celui-ci survenu en 1589. Il est lui-même archevêque de Malines de 1596 à 1620. Gisbert Combaz, né à Anvers le 23 septembre 1869 et mort à Saint-Gilles le 18 janvier 1941, est un juriste et affichiste belge, également peintre, illustrateur et lithographe. Gisbert Combaz étudie le droit à l'université libre de Bruxelles et en sort en 1891 avec le titre de docteur. Il s'inscrit en 1893 à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Bruxelles. De 1898 à 1939 Combaz est professeur à l'École des arts décoratifs et industriels d'Ixelles et entre 1912 et 1940, professeur de composition décorative à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Bruxelles. Sinologue réputé, il donne la priorité à une carrière d'enseignant et de chercheur après 1910. L'artiste fut l'un des principaux défenseurs de l'Art nouveau belge. Dessinateur des affiches pour le salon La Libre Esthétique, le style personnel de Gisbert Combaz est toujours reconnaissable aujourd'hui par ses références à la calligraphie et aux estampes Japonaises. Nahuys, Maurin Théodore Corneille Florent Napoléon né à Utrecht en 1832 et décédé à Bruxelles en 1895. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur l'héraldique et la numismatique. ‎

‎Original unpublished manuscript translation of ""Egil's Saga"" into English, done in the mid-19th century by renowned Danish philologist Niels Matthias Petersen, first professor of the Nordic languages in Denmark, predating the first published English translation with circa 50 years. Egil's saga is generally considered amongst the best and most beloved of the Icelandic sagas. Based on Petersen’s industriousness and diligent work in having his research and translations published and the many third party textual and grammatical corrections throughout the text, the present translation was most likely intended for publication. It is not evident exactly when the translation was made nor it is clear from which text/manuscript it is translated. Petersen spent time on a Danish translation of Egil’ saga in the period 1835-1839 and it is likely that the present English translation also was made then. For Petersen’s Danish translation (In the Four volume-work: “Historiske Fortællinger om Islændernes Færd”, 1839-1844) he used the second printed edition of Egil's saga from 1809. It was produced for the Arnamagnæan Commission by Gudmundur Magnússon. It has a short introduction in Latin, followed by the text of the saga and a parallel translation in Latin. This text is in the main based on that of Codex Mödruvallensis (Ms. No. 132. Fol.) in the Arnamagaean Collection. It is highly likely that Petersen also used the 1809-edition for this present English translation. The saga spans the years c. 850-1000. Its oldest manuscript (a fragment) dates back to 1240 AD, and comprises the sole source of information on the exploits of Egill, whose life is not historically recorded. Stylistic and other similarities between Egill's Saga and Heimskringla have led many scholars to believe that they were the work of the same author, Snorri Sturlasson. Not until 1893 was an English translation published. It was translated by W. C. Green from the original Icelandic “Egils saga Skallagrímssonar”. Eddison, author of epic fantasy novels and occasional member of the Inklings, judged it as ""being so bad as to be unreadable"". Eddison thought that the saga ‘perhaps the finest of all except Njal’ deserved better, and that Egil Skallagrimson, the ‘most typical of the true viking spirit’, should be brought to a wider audience – consequently Eddition made his own translation in 1930. The syntax and vocabulary in this translation are deliberately archaic in order to maintain the style of the Icelandic. Three later English translations were made: Gwyn Jones (1960), Christine Fell (1975) and Hermann Pálsson and Paul Edwards (1976). The most recent English translation is in The Complete Sagas of Icelanders (1997). Niels Matthias Petersen (1791-1862), linguist, philologist, historian and literary historian, is regarded as being the father of modern Danish saga-studies. During his school years he befriended Rasmus Rask, his senior by four years, who kindled his interest in Old Norse and the ancient history of the Nordic countries. During his theological studies, which did not lead to a formal graduation, he pursued these interests. After working as a teacher in a seminary near Odense in the period 1815-26, he returned to Copenhagen, where he remained for the rest of his life. His first linguistic publications appeared in 1826.In 1829, Petersen entered the employment of the University Library, then of the Danish central archive. In these years he published a major language history (1829-30), a work on Denmark's early history (1834-37) and a translation and edition of a large portion of the Icelandic sagas (1839-44). ""He was the first to publish a substantial collection of Icelandic sagas in translation, ten sagas in four volumes under the title ""Historical accounts of the dealings of the Icelanders at home and abroad"" (Historiske Fortællinger om Islændernes Færd hjemme og ude, 1839-44). Petersen's aim was to present the sagas as enjoyable reading for the general public, and to strengthen the Danish language by introducing Old Norse-Icelandic neologisms.In 1845 Petersen was appointed to the first professorship in the Scandinavian languages in the Nordic countries, a position he kept to his death in 1862. In this period he wrote the modestly-titled, but comprehensive and groundbreaking five-volume ""Contribution to the history of Danish literature"" (Bidrag til den danske Literaturs Historie, 1853-61). In this work Petersen introduces into Danish the theory of periodization, and several of his period titles have survived in later accounts. His concept of literature was not restricted to imaginative writing but encompassed the entire body of writings valued in society. ‎Au procès de Nuremberg, Albert Speer – l'un des plus hauts dignitaires du IIIe Reich, architecte favori du Führer qui en fit son ministre de l'armement – réussit à convaincre ses juges qu'il n'était pas responsable des effroyables crimes dont on l'accusait et échappa à la pendaison : simple technocrate, il n'aurait fait qu'obéir aux ordres, il n'avait jamais trempé dans l'horreur. Faux, usage de faux, démontre l'historien allemant Matthias Schmidt. Aidé de son collaborateur et ami Wolters, Albert Speer a falsifié la chronique qui retraçait au jour le jour les activités de son ministère. Un historien a retrouvé dans une bibliothèque anglaise l'original de ce texte qui prouve de manière éclatante et irréfutable la participation active de Speer aux atrocités qu'il a toujours approuvées. Dans ses Mémoires rédigés durant ses vingt ans de détention (Au coeur du IIIe Reich, Journal de Spandau), Speer a post-fabriqué une image de lui en tous points contraire aux faits. Grâce à Matthias Schmidt, un mythe enfin s'écroule. ‎

In folio (mm. 387 x 236), 2 parti in 1 vol., p. pergamena coeva, pp. (14),125,(5); (12),206,49,(5) (errori nella numeraz. delle pagine - manca l'occhietto); frontespizio della prima parte stampato in rosso e nero, ornato da belle testate, grandi capilettera e finali inc. su legno, con pregevole ritratto in medaglione di Francesco Stefano Duca di Lorena, alla dedica.Il volume molto ben illustrato f.t. da 43 interessantissime tavole sull'arte molitoria, raffiguranti macchinari, macine, ingranaggi, piante e sezioni relative alla costruzione di mulini e loro locazione, inc. in rame e ripieg. Nella prima parte: Von Untersuchung des Geflles, der Quantitt des Wassers, so ein Fluss in gewisser Zeit schttet .. .Nella seconda: Schau-Platz der Mhlen-Bau-Kunst, oder Kern des Mhlen-Rechts, bestehet in allerhand im heiligen rmischen Reich und andern Lndern eingefhrten Mhl-Ordnungen und Befehligen, zusamt demjenigen, was bey Mhlen-Sachen, sonderlich in Chur-Schsischen Landen und sonsten Rechtens ist ."Prima e rara edizione" di questa importante opera dedicata ai vari tipi di molini. Cfr. Berlin Katalog,I,1791 - Pggendorff,I,1438 - Brunet,III,1033 che del Theatrum machinarum generale precisa: le plus considrable ouvrage qu'on eut alors sur la mcanique - Graesse,IV,188. Jacob Leupold, ingegnere meccanico (Planitz 1674 - Lipsia 1727), fin da giovane dimostr un gusto appassionato per il disegno delle macchine; apr a Lipsia (1699) una officina meccanica e costru una pompa d'aria, della quale forn molti esemplari ai laboratori dell'epoca; ide una macchina a vapore pi semplice di quella di Papin, e perfezion molti strumenti di fisica. Fu nominato dall'elettore di Sassonia commissario per le miniere e fu corrispondente dell'Accademia delle Scienze di Berlino. Pubblic a Lipsia il "Theatrum machinarum generale" (1723-27) che contiene una completa esposizione di tutta la tecnica meccanica e idraulica del suo tempo, in 7 volumi + un volume di supplemento che usc nel 1739 per conto di J.E. Scheffler.Nel 1735 Johann Matthias Beyer dette alle stampe il Teatro dell'architettura dei mulini, in 2 parti, pubblicato dopo la morte di Leupold, che costituisce il nono volume dell'enciclopedico Theatrum Machinarum. Durante l' Ancien Rgime fu alto funzionario di corte nel Principato di Brunswick-Wolfenbttel; nel Regno di Westfalia fu Presidente degli Stati Imperiali e nel Ducato di Brunswick fu un politico di primo piano.Al frontesp. timbro di Gotthard Sachsenberg.‎
