Dovetail biedt het eerste monografische overzicht van het oeuvre van Kasper Bosmans tot nu toe. De redactrice van het boek, Julia Mulli , opent met een inleiding over zijn praktijk. WIELS senior curator Zo Gray schrijft over hoe Bosmans verhalen met elkaar verweeft; kunsthistoricus Phillip Van Den Bossche schrijft over zijn quilts; filosoof Piero Bisello past het concept van "Coherentisme" toe op een aantal individuele werken; en kunsthistoricus Martin Germann onderzoekt Bosmans' "legend paintings". Het boek is rijk ge llustreerd met foto's van individuele werken en tentoonstellingsbeelden, waaronder een samenwerking met kunstenares Marina Pinsky. Deze publicatie ging vooraf aan Bosmans' solotentoonstelling Husbandry in WIELS, die werd uitgesteld omwille van de Covid-19-crisis, en die geopend werd in februari 2022. Kasper Bosmans ( 1990, Belgi ) is een scherpe observator van de vele manieren waarop beelden de grens tussen natuur en fictie, kunst en ambacht aftasten. Vanuit een intu tieve antropologische benadering neemt hij de overblijfselen van lokale tradities en mythologische iconografie in de wereld van vandaag. Vanuit spel laat Bosmans associatieve schoonheid ontstaan in de vorm van performances, schilderijen, tekeningen en sculpturale installaties. Door gebruik te maken van materialen als melk, zand en marmer verkent hij zowel functionele als decoratieve vormen en de spanningsrelatie die tussen beiden kan bestaan. Published in conjunction with a combined exhibition of work by Micha l Borremans and Mark Manders at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, this volume documents what turned out to be an remarkable encounter between these two European artists. The delicate experiment of a double show like this one forces interference and tension between two distinct bodies of work, with the work of one artist providing the framework for the other, and vice versa. Nevertheless, it is an exemplary show in which a kind of choreography between Borremans, a painter, and Manders, a sculptor and installation architect, emerges through a sombre colours and formal contrasts.

Since the 1990s, Rachel Harrison (born 1966) has developed a colorful and delightfully grotesque sculptural idiom out of the most contemporary detritus--styrofoam, plastic buckets, vacuum cleaners--which she blends with slapstick humor and art historical and pop cultural references. Fake Titel presents sculptures and drawings from three recent series: The Help (2012), the large-scale installation Incidents of Travel in Yucatan (2011) and the photographic suite Sunset Series (2000?2012). The Help examines the roles of the artist, the muse and the "help," mixing found objects with abstract forms; Incidents of Travel in Yucatan is a mixed-media installation including a wall of pedestals, autonomous sculptures and video; and the Sunset Series comprises 31 photographs of a single source image, a photograph of a sunset. In each photograph in the series, shot on 35mm film, the artist physically manipulates the found snapshot to create a new image.

Het oeuvre van Gerhard Richter overstijgt de historische scheiding tussen abstracte en figuratieve schilderkunst. Zijn werken beperken zich niet tot een zelfgenoegzaam spel van kleuren en vormen maar scheppen al evenmin een zuiver beeld van de realiteit. Zelfs als die realiteit en haar feitelijkheden de onderwerpen van zijn werken vormen, stelt de schilderende scepticus het figuratieve ter discussie. Dat geldt met name voor zijn schilderijen van deuren, gordijnen en vensters uit de jaren 1960 die centraal staan op deze tentoonstelling. Hoewel ze refereren aan de typische kenmerken van een figuratieve kunst die ons de werkelijkheid toont, ontzeggen ze ons tegelijkertijd de toegang tot deze werkelijkheid door een picturale ruimte te scheppen die elke illusie van diepte ontbeert. Een goed voorbeeld hiervan zijn de gordijnschilderijen, die ostentatief weigeren de wereld van het figuratieve te onthullen: het doek is gevallen. De iconoclastische benadering van de kunstenaar valt niet te ontkennen. Voor Richter betekent schilderen het ontwerpen van oppervlakken, het experimenteren met de illusoire aard van de kunst die ons de werkelijkheid "achter" het beeld in het beste geval enkel laat inbeelden. Dit is zeker het geval voor zijn deur-, gordijn- en vensterschilderijen, waarop hij een picturaal concept ontwikkelde dat nog altijd relevant is voor zijn huidige werk, zijn geschraapte schilderijen. Op de tentoonstelling die ter gelegenheid van Gerhard Richters 85e verjaardag wordt georganiseerd, zullen ongeveer vijfentwintig sleutelwerken van de kunstenaar te zien zijn. Verder zullen in het boek ook andere werken opgenomen worden waaronder enkele bijkomende doeken (jaren '60 en '70) die ook in de SMAK tentoonstelling te zien zullen zijn. Na Bonn trekt zal de tentoonstelling naar het Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst () in Gent.

The films, paintings, and drawings by Belgian artist Michael Borremans (*1963 in Geraardsbergen) overwhelm the viewer through the use of deceleration, precision, and vortex.
