TABLE OF CONTENTS Presentación (J. C. Martín-Iglesias) Introducciones I. Summary The present volume comprises editions, by several of the major scholars now working in the field of medieval Irish apocrypha, of a selection of important eschatological texts. Two of these, edited by John Carey, are works original to Ireland: The Vision of Adomnán, an account of the afterworld notable for its vividness and complexity; and The Two Sorrows of the Kingdom of Heaven, a shorter text which describes the judgement of souls and the end of the world with reference to the destinies of Enoch and Elijah. Caoimhín Breatnach provides editions of the Irish versions of some of the fundamental texts of Christian apocalyptic: The Assumption of Mary (supplemented by a closely related Latin variant, edited by Joseph Flahive), and one of the Redactions of The Vision of Saint Paul. Professor Breatnach also contributes a series of accounts of Antichrist: these belong to a type that has long been regarded as typically Irish, but for which Charles D. Wright here supplies a broader context in an innovative and important study. Fr Martin McNamara MSC introduces the collection with a discussion of "Some Aspects of Medieval Irish Eschatology". This is the first volume of a two-part collection: the texts edited in the sequel (CCSA 22) are concerned with the events of the end time, and in particular with the theme of the signs before the Day of Judgement. The art of Kris Martin (b. Kortrijk, 1997s; lives and works in Ghent) conveys an intense experience of the finitude of life. Time is essential to this artist, whose relentless engagement with mortality and the evanescent qualities of art has defined his rising career. His works, which include installations, sculptures, photographs, drawings, writing, and sound, also inquire into the possibility of spirituality, eternity, religion, and God. Despite their melancholy and romantic aspects, they often also display flashes of skeptical humor. Martin uses found items that always bring their own history with them; or he commissions lavishly produced objects in formats ranging from the very small to the expansive. Opulently designed in collaboration with the artist, this book presents recent works as well as images of earlier works for reference purposes. With essays by Volker Adolphs, Susanne Figner, and Madeleine Schuppli, and a preface by Veit Görner.

Summary In September 1739 at the château de Morville near Paris, a group of elite amateur artists staged a ballet pantomime known as the ?Ballet des Porcelaines,? and sometimes also as ?The Teapot Prince.? Written by the comte de Caylus, with music by Grandval, it tells the story of a prince who searches for his beloved on a faraway island ruled by an evil magician. The magician has turned the island's inhabitants into porcelain, an event the audience witnesses in the form of a male and female singer who spin around on stage until they transform into vases. Aside from the libretto and the score, nothing survives of the Ballet des Porcelaines. The costumes and choreography are unknown. Although it inspired later famous ballets featuring sleeping beauties and porcelain princesses, it seems to have been staged only twice: first in 1739 and again two years later on the grounds of the estate, next to a lake encircled by vases and an illuminated arch suggesting a nighttime performance. The château's owner served as France's foreign minister and promoted trade with Asia. We can assume some kind of chinoiserie imagery and context for the ballet, which can be interpreted both as a standard fairy tale love story and as an allegory for the intense European desire to know and steal the secrets of porcelain manufacture. The ballet is an example of the deep intertwining of visual and performing arts in eighteenth-century France, and to an enchantment with Asia embodied on stage and in life by porcelain goods. The plot's animation of porcelain also relates to a period understanding of the permeable boundary between persons and things manifested in a variety of cultural forms. The ballet exemplifies the profound sense of magic, mystery, and desire that porcelain instilled in European viewers (who referred to it as ?white gold?), an effect that is lost on many museumgoers today. Summary The present volume, the continuation of volume CCSA 21, comprises further editions, by several of the major scholars now working in the field of medieval Irish apocrypha, of a selection of important eschatological texts. The first of these, Bráth, níba bec a breisim, edited by Erich Poppe, concerns the events which will occur on the Day of Judgement. Caitríona Ó Dochartaigh provides edition, translation and a commentary of Poems 153-162 of Saltair na Rann, an independent eschatological composition. Prof. Uáitéar Mac Gearailt publishes a study and a commented edition of Scéla Laí Brátha, Tidings of the Day of Judgement. Prof. Caoimhín Breatnach publishes Garbh éirghid iodhain bhrátha, Harshly do the pangs of Doomsday, as well as two short Irish texts on the Fifteen Signs Before Doomsday and on Doomsday. Prof. Pádraig A. Breatnach provides the edition of A Tract on the Fifteen Signs of Doomsday. Fr Martin McNamara MSC publishes two short studies in Appendices: the first one on the duration of the Day of Doom (The Day of Doom a Thousand Years, in Appendix 1); the second one concerns a quotation in the Fifteen Signs text edited by Caoimhín Breatnach from the 15th-century Latin theologian Pelbartus (Passage from Pelbartus, Advent Sermon IV: Appendix 2). Fr McNamara also introduces the collection with a discussion of ?The Signs before Doomsday?. The catalogue presents over forty works: installations, sculptures, collages, paintings and films. It also puts forward a hypothesis: that Martin Margiela has always been an artist. Internationally renowned in the fashion world since the late 1980s, throughout his career as a designer, he deliberately upended the conventions of fashion one by one, through runway shows, materials and forms that became conceptual and aesthetic revolutions. Most of these works return to the artist's obsessions. The body is very much in evidence: anatomies inspired by the academic tradition; hair and skin in almost abstract form, signs of the passing of time. The catalogue has been designed by Irma Boom in close collaboration with Martin Margiela. It is thought as a "making of" of the show at Lafayette Anticipations and present both final and "in progress" pictures of the works.

A compact edition of Hockney and Gayford?s brilliantly original book, with updated material and brand-new pieces of art Informed and energized by a lifetime of painting, drawing, and making images with cameras, David Hockney, in collaboration with art critic Martin Gayford, explores how and why pictures have been made across the millennia. Juxtaposing a rich variety of images?a still from a Disney cartoon with a Japanese woodblock print by Hiroshige, a scene from an Eisenstein film with a Velazquez painting?the authors cross the normal boundaries between high culture and popular entertainment, and argue that film, photography, painting, and drawing are deeply interconnected. Featuring a revised final chapter with some of Hockney?s latest works, this new, compact edition of A History of Pictures remains a significant contribution to the discussion of how artists represent reality. David Hockney is one of the world?s most popular painters and the author of the bestselling Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters (2001). Martin Gayford is an art critic and the author of many books, including Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud (2013) and Rendez-vous with Art, with Philippe de Montebello (2014).

The films, paintings, and drawings by Belgian artist Michael Borremans (*1963 in Geraardsbergen) overwhelm the viewer through the use of deceleration, precision, and vortex. His seductive works contain timeless images of internal drive and external force, of the latent pressure involved in being human. Behind a veil of stylistic perfection, the artist simulates common rituals of interpretation and meaning by deliberately inserting mistakes and vagaries. His intensely atmospheric images are puzzles involving political and psychological patterns of perceiving the world, which oscillate in a camouflaging, fragile way between inexorable realism and nebulous distance. With texts by Martin Germann and Hans Rudolf Reust and a foreword by Veit Gorner, the volume presents a selection of drawings and excerpts from Borremans's filmic oeuvre. It also includes a series of new paintings.

Summary Palaeographers and codicologists have gradually developed concepts and terms to analyse change in medieval and Renaissance scripts and manuscripts. Some of these endeavour to offer explanatory models, either for specific phenomena or for general trends. Others are essentially descriptive, typological and chronological, referring to implicit (traditional) theories of historical evolution. The papers in this book offer a wide range of palaeographical and codicological case-studies describing and analysing "change". Several papers offer the outlines of a theoretical framework, bringing out the conditions for the evolution of scripts as well as for progress in the production and distribution of texts and manuscripts. The Music Boy exhibition at the New Art Gallery Walsall is the artist's first in the United Kingdom. A 168-page hardback, illustrated catalogue featuring extensive essays by Andrew Graham-Dixon and Martin Herbert, as well as a foreword by Charlotte Mullins was published on the occasion. The exhibition is titled after a quadriptych of paintings depicting the artist's grandmother and his uncle playing an accordion.Jan Vanriet's work mainly concerns the memory of history and the construction of pictorial surface. As Martin Herbert writes: "Vanriet builds up his paintings in layers, and the strata of underpainting have, in his case, a polyvalent quality. In some cases they form glazes that gift the paintings with an internal glow; in others, the half-visible ghosts of earlier paintings both reaffirm the idea that something is being held back, and situate Vanriet's paintings as a carefully wrought, crafted statement that has gone through stages in order to reach a conclusive point, like a phrase honed through multiple careful edits." Jan Vanriet's mother, father and uncle participated in the Resistance movement and were deported by the Nazis. His parents met in the Mauthausen concentration camp and their stories and memories of the Second World War and its aftermath continue to permeate his paintings. Themes of love, loss, identity, destiny and disappearance pervade his work. And yet Vanriet says: "The starting point may be my family, but I see it as a universal story. I don't want the themes to be too narrow, too close to me, because they should go wider than that. If not, it is only anecdote and I have not painted well enough."

Summary The unique Arabic version of the Iberian canon law code 'Collectio Hispana', preserved in a mid-eleventh-century manuscript of the Royal Library of El Escorial, has been deemed ?the most distinguished and characteristic? work of medieval Andalusi Christian writing. It represents an exceptional source witness to the internal legal organisation of Christian communities in Muslim-dominated al-Andalus as well as to their acculturation to Islamicate environments. Yet, the Arabic collection has received only little scholarly attention so far. This volume presents the results of a recent interdisciplinary research project on the Arabic canon law manuscript, flanked by contributions from neigbouring fields of research that allow for a comparative assessment of the substantial new findings. The individual chapters in this volume address issues such as the origins of the Arabic law code and its sole transmitting manuscript, its language and translation strategies, its source value for both the persistence and transformation of ecclesiastical institutions after the Muslim conquest, or the law code's position in the judicial practice of al-Andalus. The volume brings together the scholarly expertise of distinguished specialists in a broad range of disciplines, e.g. history, Arabic and Latin philology, medieval palaeography and codicology, archaeology, coptology, theology and history of law. Summary The Homily of the Unworthy Priest Cosmas Against the Newly-Appeared Heresy of Bogomil (10th century) is a key source for the religious history of the Balkan peninsula. It is one of the earliest and richest sources for the rise of the dualistic religious movement of Bogomilism in the early Middle Ages. Written in a period of war and crisis of the Bulgarian Empire Cosmas sermon is also an important work of Eastern Christian Theology, calling for a thorough reform of clergy and monasticism. During the subsequent centuries Cosmas' work was copied and excerpted by Bulgarian, Serbian and Russian churchmen who were seeking inspiration in their struggle for ecclesial reform and against religious dissent of various heretical movements. In the processes of national identity construction on the Balkans during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Cosmas' Homily again played a remarkable role. The present study provides the first complete translation into a western language of Begunov's 1973 critical edition. The German translation is accompanied by an introduction and a commentary. Summary Throughout the centuries Byzantium's ambitious authors were conscious of the significance of literary registers for the reception of their texts. They deliberately made use of stylistic elements or refrained from using certain features in order to reach their target audience. There are certain groups of texts dating from various periods where these stylistic elements can be tracked precisely by comparison of two or even more versions with their model text. Such examples of rewriting can be found particularly within genres with a broader audience appeal, namely hagiography and historiography. It is in both genres that we encounter metaphrastic processes, in terms of stylistic elaboration and in terms of stylistic simplification. As well as stylistic reshaping, metaphrasis may also encompass the addition or removal of literary and/or thematic aspects. All these processes signify intent as well as authorial interpretation. Frequently, the ideological orientation of a text is refurbished through rewriting. Teasing out these strands for exploration helps to supply a potential wealth of information on the author (if known), cultural (social, religious, historical) context, and creative ability, as well as levels of education and literacy.

The Flemish artist Peter Paul Rubens is probably the most important foreign artist to have worked in England. The story of how this came to be, of what he did when he was in England and what he painted for King Charles I is the story of this book. Charles and his father, the first Stuart monarchs of Great Britain, led and promoted a great wave of interest in the arts, in particular the visual arts, that culminated in Rubens painting nine large canvases to decorate the ceiling of Inigo Jones?s Banqetting Hall, the ceremonial centre of the Court in Whitehall - a monument that is still intact today. It is this cycle, an hitherto unappreciated masterpiece of Baroque state art, that is the focus of this book. How Rubens came to obtain the commission is a tale of international politics and diplomacy in which the artist himself played a significant role. The author relates these complex political relationships and missions with great insight and clarity, and in doing so also describes the cultural and social setting in which Rubens found himself while in London. The illustrations that accompany the text include not only many of Rubens's own paintings and drawings made when he was in London, but also some of the now well-known works by the Italian and North European Renaissance masters that Rubens would have seen in the magnificent art collections of the King and the English aristocracy. Foremost however among the illustrations are the reproductions of the Banqueting Hall ceiling itself: these are mostly in colour, showing each of the three central scenes both complete and with striking details that would be difficult to see in the Hall itself. Also the corner oval painting as well as the long, celebratory, exuberant processions on either side are reproduced in colour and in detail, so that the reader, guided by the author's full descriptions and interpretations, can experience a unique viewing and understanding of Rubens's masterpiece. The Author, Gregory Martin, has been interested in the ceiling paintings of the Banquetting Hall ever since he worked at the National Gallery in the 1960s, when he wrote the catalogue of the Gallery's Flemish paintings. Towards the end of his subsequent career at Christie's, where he was a director concerned with old master paintings, he was commissioned to write the Corpus Rubenianum volume on the ceiling decoration of the Banquetting Hall which was published in 2005. In the present book he returns to the subject, treating it and the related matter of Rubens in London in a way designed to appeal to a wider readership.
