‎Première édition américaine (l'originale porte l'adresse de Londres, Newby, et comporte trois volumes).Margaret Power (1789-1849), devenue par son mariage avec Charles Gardiner comtesse de Blessington, était une salonnière célèbre à Londres : amie de Byron, de Charles Dickens, de James Bulwer, d'Alfred d'Orsay et de la famille Bonaparte, elle avait ouvert à Kensington un salon littéraire qui devint le rendez-vous obligé de nombreux étrangers de distinction.Également irlandais, Richard Robert Madden (1798-1886) est surtout connu pour son engagement abolitionniste et ses fonctions officielles à la Jamaïque de 1833 à 1839, au moment où il fallut mettre en application la libération des esclaves ; il avait fait la connaissance de Lady Blessington et de son cercle lors d'un séjour à Naples.Mentions manuscrites de lecture achevée à la fin des deux volumes (datées des 2 et 6 décembre 1863 et signées H. London, William Pickering, 1833, first edition , large paper edition, in-folio format ( 36,5 x 26,5 cm ) , (6) nn pp + 18 pp + 40 leaves with descriptions, and 59 etched or lithographed plates heightened with printed colouring and hand-colouring. + final addendum leaf ( complete). Bound in 19th century half morocco, marbled boards, all edges gilt. Some rubbing to the gilt spine and joints, corners with some traces of use, head of spine a bit chipped. Inside : a very good , clean and stainless copy. This is a fine copy of the large-paper issue . In this edition the plates were hand finished and illuminated in real gold, rather than yellow watercolour. The first 4 plates have a highly burnished background of gold leaf.. The book was issued in 12 monthly parts each containing 5 plates. It started in June 1830. The plain issue costed 3s 6d. The coloured edition costed 7s 6d. The copy on offer here, printed in a very limited number in format Imperial Quarto, with the ornaments more highely finished in opaque colours and heightened with gold was at 15s per part (!) ( from the prospectus). A very fine copy, with illustrations which nearly match the mediaeval originals in beauty. This book is one of the finest 19th c. publications on mediaeval Western manuscripts and a gorgeous illustration of the revival of the interest in these manuscripts.‎

‎London, Henry Colburn, 1829, in-8vo, handcoloured lithogr. frontispiece (the author in his Syrian costume) + XVI + 402 p., bound in half calf with corners, marroun and green title and vol. labels on spine, goldtooled spine, corners lightly used, marbled edges. Very fine copy.‎

‎First edition. This first volume contains 24 letters to British men of high rank on a wide variety of ethnographical matters, many of which are of medical character. The author was an Irish physician; in these letters he made observations on e.g. opium eaters, the state of medicine at Constantinople (a consultation, medical priest, wounded artillery man, amulets, vapour bath, etc.), harems, ceremonies, law, the plague at Alexandria, malaria, filth of Turkish towns, religion, audience with the sultan, medical advice to western travellers in the Middle East, and many many other most interesting aspects.In his preface he describes the difficulty he encountered , when his fate had been "... to have been taken for a spy in Syria, to have endangered my life in Candia, for refusing to administer poison, to have been shot in Canea twice, and once on the Nile by Turkish soldiers, to have been accused of changing the fragments of a broken statue into gold at Thebes, to have been charged with sorcery in Nubia, and to have been captive with Greek pirates, for wearing a long beard, when taken in a vessel bearing Turkish property ...".
