Der Berner Gottlieb Abraham von Jenner (1765-1834) gründete 1783 ein Weinhandelsunternehmen, 1795 wurde er Berner Grossrat und 1797-1798 war er Oberkriegskommissär. Durch grosses diplomatisches Geschick entzog er einen Teil des bernischen Staatsschatzes dem französischen und helvetischen Zugriff. Jenner initiierte den Staatsstreich vom Oktober 1801 mit, im Juni 1802 wirkte er als Aussenminister der letzten helvetischen Regierung, 1802-1803 war er Mitglied der provisorischen Regierungskommission. Danach sass er bis 1813 im Berner Kleinen Rat sowie im Finanzrat. 1815 beteiligte er sich an der Eingliederung des Juras und wurde erster Oberamtmann in Pruntrut (1815-1823). Jenner galt als der begabteste berner Politiker der Übergangszeit, der ohne persönlichen Ehrgeiz oft mit machiavellistischen Methoden arbeitete. Sciences et Arts. Lower right corner of title-page torn away, only loss of paper, no loss of letters. Entire volume offered. 400 pp., 4 folded tables. A brownspot on foot of p. 3, and a wormtract in margins of some of the first leaves, otherwise internally clean and fine, printed on good paper. Jenner's paper: pp. 258-284 and pp. 367-399.
First French version, and the first translation at all of this important work in the history of medicine, being the foundation of all subsequent work in immunology and virology. Published the same year as the English original.""On the basis of an old country tradition that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox were not susceptible to smallpox, Jenner, an English country physician, decided to experiment by injecting cowpox-infected lymph into a local boy. After inoculation the boy was found to be immune to smallpox and Jenner continued his experiments. In 1798 he published the present epochal work, the results of a long and successful series of case histories. By 1803 his work had been translated into numerous languages and his method of immunization was taken up with amazing speed, becoming almost universally adopted. Courte (quarante-trois pages), mais complète, biographie d’Edward JENNER (Berkeley, 1749-1823) par le Dr Paul LORAIN (Paris, 1827-1875), médecin légiste, Professeur d’histoire de la médecine et de la chirurgie. La BNF montre deux exemplaires numérisés in Gallica : dans le premier (NUMM-76442), le fragment est identique à celui-ci, dans le second (NUMM-6479031), cette biogtraphie est augmentée du « catalogue des livres de fond » de l’éditeur (48pp., dont le titre). Le texte sera réédité, en 1870, avec un titre refait (BNF 30832574), numérisé lui aussi in Gallica) : « Conférences historiques. Jenner et la vaccine ». Paris, Germer-Baillière, etc., sous forme de tirage à part, in-8 de 48pp. [dont le titre]. La différence de pagination entre les deux versions provient d’une modification de la composition (1866 : 35 lignes par page, 1870 : 33). Ce fascicule contient –au moins- un petit changement : première page : la mention « Il y a soixante-cinq ans » est logiquement transformée en « soixante-dix ans » ; in fine un ajout à la toute dernière phrase : « Enfin, M. Depaul a plaidé éloquemment dans le sein de l’Académie de médecine la cause du cowpox », référence implicite aux deux textes du Dr Depaul , que nous présentons ici, respectivement datés de 1867 (MED206) et 1869 (MED103). Seule la plaquette est reprintée à profusion, avec la mention mensongère d’édition originale… Pour mémoire, on trouve dans ce volume :
