‎Système social, ou principes naturels de la morale et de la politique, avec un examen de l'influence du gouvernement sur les moeurs. Par l'Auteur du Systême de la Nature [Mirabaud]. 3 Tomes. - [THE SYSTEM OF NATURE CONTINUED... THE SOCIAL SYSTEM]‎

‎London [recte: Amsterdam, M.M. Rey], 1773. 8vo. Bound in one beautiful contemporary full mottled calf binding with five raised bands to richly gilt spine triple gilt line-borders to boards and inner gilt dentelles. Edges of boards with single gilt line. All edges gilt. Corners abit bumped and a bit of overall wear. Inner hinges a bit weak. Internally very fine and clean. All in all a very fine copy indeed. (4), 210176" 167 pp. With all three half-titles, all three title-pages and all three indexes, as well as the introduction.‎

‎The rare first edition, first issue (though Tchermerzine mentions an unknown 2-volume-edition form the same year - this edition has never been verified), of one of d'Holbach's most important works, his influential ""social"" and political continuation of his seminal main work ""Systeme de la nature"" - the bible of materialism. D'Holbach (1723-1789), who was raised by a wealthy uncle, whom he inherited, together with his title of Baron, in 1753, maintained one of the most famous salons in Paris. This salon became the social and intellectual centre for the Encyclopédie, which was edited by Diderot and d'Alembert, whom he became closely connected with. D'Holbach himself also contributed decisively to the Encyclopédie, with at least 400 signed contributions, and probably as many unsigned, between 1752 and 1765. The ""Côterie holbachique"" or ""the café of Europe"", as the salon was known, attracted the most brilliant scientists, philosophers, writers and artists of the time (e.g. Diderot, d'Alembert, Helvetius, Voltaire, Hume, Sterne etc, etc.), and it became one of the most important gathering-places for the exchange of philosophical, scientific and political views under the ""ancient régime"". Apart from developing several foundational theories of seminal scientific and philosophical value, D'Holbach became known as one of the most skilled propagators and popularizers of scientific and philosophical ideas, promoting scientific progress and spreading philosophical ideas in a new and highly effective manner. D'Holbach was himself the most audacious philosophe of this circle. During the 1760's he caused numerous anticlerical tracts (written in large, but not entirely, by himself) to be clandestinely printed abroad and illegally circulated in France. His philosophical masterpiece, the ""Système de la nature, ou des lois du monde physique et du monde moral"", a methodological and intransigent affirmation of materialism and atheism, appeared anonymously in 1770"" (D.S.B. VI:468), as did the social and political follow-up of it, the famous ""Systême social"" in 1773. That is to say, Mirabeau whom he had used as the author on the ""System of Nature"" in 1770 is not mentioned in the ""Social System"", on the title-page of which is merely stated ""By the Author of ""Systême de la Nature"". As the theories of d'Holbach's two systematic works were at least as anticlerical and unaccepted as those of his smaller tracts, and on top of that so well presented and so convincing, it would have been dangerous for him to print any of them under his own name, and even under the name of the city or printer. Thus, ""Systême de la Nature"" appeared pseudonomously under the name of the secretary of the Académie Francaise, J.B. Mirabaud, who had died 10 years earlier, and under a fictive place of printing, namely London instead of Amsterdam. ""He could not publish safely under his own name, but had the ingenious idea of using the names of recently dead French authors. Thus, in 1770, his most famous book, ""The System of Nature"", appeared under the name Jean-Baptiste Mirabaud."" (PMM 215), and so the next ""System"" also appeared in the same manner three years later. In his ""Systême de la Nature"", d'Holbach had presented philosophical materialism in an actual system for the first time and had created a work that dared unite the essence of all the essential material of the English and French Enlightenment and incorporate it into a closed materialistic system"" on the basis of a completely materialistic and atheistic foundation, he provided the modern world with a moral and ethic philosophy, the effects of which were tremendous. It is this materialism and atheism that he continues three years later in his next systematic work ""Systême social"", through which politics, morality, and sociology are also incorporated into his system and take the place of the Christianity that he had so fiercely attacked earlier on. In this great work he extends his ethical views to the state and continues the description of human interest from ""Systême de la Nature"" by developing a notion of the just state (by d'Holbach calle ""ethocracy"") that is to secure general welfare. ""Système social (1773"" ""Social System"") placed morality and politics in a utilitarian framework wherein duty became prudent self-interest."" (Encyclopaedia Brittanica). ""Holbach's foundational view is that the most valuable thing a person seeking self-preservation can do is to unite with another person: ""Man is of all beings the most necessary to man"" (Sysème social, 76"" cf. Spinoza's Ethics IVP35C1, C2, and S). Society, when it is just, unites for the common purpose of preservation and the securing of welfare, and society contracts with government for this purpose."" (SEP).As the ""Systême de la Nature"" had been condemned to burning in the year of its publication, so the ""Systême social"" was on the list of books to be confiscated already in 1773, and it was placed on the Index of the Church in August 1775. As the ""Systême de la Nature"", the ""Systême social"" is thus also of great scarcity. Another edition of the work appeared later the same year, in 12mo. Tchermerzine says that ""Il ya une édition, que nous ne connaissons pas, en 2 vol. in-8. C'est sans doute l'originale."" The present edition was reprinted the following year, in 1774.Tschermerzine VI:246" Graesse III:317 Barbier IV:622 (only listing later editions).‎

(1872)

‎Grundzüge einer Vibrationstheorie der Natur. - [THE PRECURSER OF THE THEORY OF WAVE-MECHANICS]‎

‎Reval, Kluge, 1872. 8vo. Completely uncut and unopened in the original printed orange wrappers. A bit of soiling to wrappers, minor lacks to capitals, a small tear to the spine and a tear to the back wrapper - no loss. (10), 405, (1) pp.‎

‎Uncommon first edition of Dellingshausen's noteworthy main work, which constitutes one of the first attempts to prove the identity of particles and waves, thus anticipating by many decades a theory that eventually led to the creation of wave-mechanics, by many considered the single most important contribution to theoretical physics in the twentieth century. The honour of founding wave-mechanics befalls Louis de Broglie, who won the Nobel Prize for it in 1929. With his PhD-thesis of 1924, which inspired Einstein, who supported his theory of the wave-particle duality of matter, De Broglie had set the basis for one of the greatest innovations of the 20th century. It is, however, often forgotten - or not known - that a few solid minds had actually had theories along the same lines, long before de Broglie writes his seminal PhD-thesis. The first and most well-founded of these seems to be Dellingshausen, who presents his theory in full in his great main work ""Grundzüge einer Vibrationstheorie der Natur"". ""Before we analyze Louis de Broglie's decisive contributions to the conceptual development of quantum mechanics and, in particular, his introduction of what is often called ""matter waves"", we shall ask ourselves whether - as it has so often occurred with great innovations in science - his ideas had not been anticipated, at least in part, by speculative thinkers in the past. Because of his optical-mechanical analogy Hamilton is often regarded as a direct precursor of de Broglie's hypothesis. This, however, is only partially true [...] Hamilton's interest, it is clear, lay wholly in the formal-mathematical aspects and not in the problem of the physical nature of light. There were in the nineteenth century, however, some unorthodox thinkers who maintained, whether on physical or philosophical grounds, the ultimate identity between particles and waves. One of the most eloquent proponents of these ideas was Baron Nicolai Dellingshausen. After studying physics at the University of Dorpat, Leipzig, and Heidelberg, he returned to his Baltic estate and wrote a number of interesting studies on physics while administering his lands and farms. His major work, an enlarged version of an earlier essay, was published in 1872 under the title ""Grundzüge einer Vibrationstheorie der Natur"". Basing his ideas on the cartesian conception of extension as the chief characteristic of matter and on the kinetic theory of heat which reduced heat to motion, Dellingshausen identified atoms with standing waves and interpreted motion of particles as a vibrational process. According to his doctrine bodies are merely ""Extended centers of vibrational motions"" and the ""nature of matter is extension in motion."" (Jammer, pp. 239-40).‎

(1748)

‎Les devoirs de l'homme, et du citoien, tels qu'ils lui sont prescrits par la loi naturelle. 2 vols.‎

‎Amsterdam, Coup, 1748. 8vo. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands, richly gilt spine and gilt super ex-libris to front board. Wear and soiling to extremities, two large scratches with loss of leather to front board. Leather on spine cracked and spine-ends chipped. Internally nice and clean. XLIX, 252, (3), 256, 523 pp. ‎

‎Sixth French translation of Pufendorf's second main work, his seminal ""On the Duty of Man and Citizen "", which became extremely influential during the Enlightenment of the 18th century and had a great impact on legal, moral, constitutional, and political thinking, not only in Europe, but also in America. It was perhaps more influential than the work which is usually considered Pufendorf's main work, namely his ""De jure naturae et gentium"" from 1672, which is longer and more elaborate, though, or perhaps exactly therefore, the present work must be said to be the one that came to exercise the greatest impact and came to spread Pufendorf's thought, not least his concept of ""natural law"" and his analysis of just war theory (which he gives in the present work), throughout Europe and America. It is the present work ""that guaranteed him a place in university curricula for a century."" (SEP).‎

‎The very rare first edition, first issue of Montesquieu's seminal main work, ""[i]n many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century"" (PMM 197), in which the author presents his theory of constitutional monarchy, advocating constitutionalism and the separation of powers, and explains human laws and social institutions. The very first printing, i.e. the first edition, first issue, of the present work is of the utmost scarcity. Numerous editions and issues of the work were printed in the months following the first appearance. The present copy has the first issue pointers (the two ""r""s in ""Barrillot"" on the title-page, no errata). It does not have a folding map, as mentioned by Brunet, but whether this is actually supposed to be present or not in the first printing, has not been established - some bibliographers say that it should not be there.Montesquieu began writing this his magnum opus in 1743, by the end of which year he had almost finished the first draft of it. The same year he began the first of two great revisions of it, which he finished in 1746. In 1747 he finished his second revision, adding several new chapters, and chose J. Barrillot from Geneva to publish the work, which finally appeared for the first time in November 1748, in two quarto volumes, with no mention of author or year. Numerous editions and issues appeared the following months and years, and by 1751 22 editions of the work had appeared. Already in 1750 the work was published in English, the English editions amounting to 10 by 1773, and by 1801 the work had appeared in both German (1789), Dutch, Danish, Polish, Italian, and Russian (1801). The work exercised the greatest of influence, both negative and positive, and numerous anti-Montesquieu-pamphlets and articles appeared during the last half of the 18th century. Because of the work, Montesquieu was also attacked by the Sorbonne, as well as in the general assembly of the French clergy, and in Rome. In 1751 the work was placed on the Index. As the number of editions, translations etc. bears witness to, the work provided the greatest of impact on 18th century political thought as well as actual politics and law. In fact, few other works can be claimed to possess the same power of influence as this one, directly affecting the likes of Tocqueville and Catherine the Great. Although Montesquieu had to defend himself against great thinkers like Voltaire, ""his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated."" (PMM 197). ""Montesquieu was one of the great political philosophers of the Enlightenment. Insatiably curious and mordantly funny, he constructed a naturalistic account of the various forms of government, and of the causes that made them what they were and that advanced or constrained their development. He used this account to explain how governments might be preserved from corruption. He saw despotism, in particular, as a standing danger for any government not already despotic, and argued that it could best be prevented by a system in which different bodies exercised legislative, executive, and judicial power, and in which all those bodies were bound by the rule of law. This theory of the separation of powers had an enormous impact on liberal political theory, and on the framers of the constitution of the United States of America.""
