‎The very rare first edition of this important and influential first English/German dictionary: “Thus when, in 1706, Ludwig inaugurated the history of bilingual German/English lexicography, it was as a somewhat late first entrant to the history of bilingual dictionaries among what we might today consider the ‘major’ languages of Europe, and certainly notably later than English–French, English–Spanish, English–Italian and English–Dutch lexicography. It is telling that Ludwig had recourse to the older practice of adapting an existing bilingual source. There were as yet no monolingual German dictionaries on which to draw.” (McLelland, Christian Ludwig (1660–1728) and the beginnings of German/English lexicography) Ludwig’s dictionary was not only the first but also so good it was do dominate the market for an entire century. The first leaves comprise a long dedication to Sophia, Electress of Hanover. For a time it looked as if she was to succeed to the throne of England, hence the relative sudden interest in Germany of such a dictionary. Sophia died less than two months before she would have become Queen of Great Britain and Ireland and Consequently, her son George I became King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1 August 1714. “Dedicating his 1706 dictionary to Sophia, Electoral Princess and duchess-dowager of Hanover, Ludwig remarked on the change in Anglo-German relations from previous entfremdung und widerwillen (‘alienation and antipathy’) to eine erwünschte vereinigung (‘a desired unification’) through the anticipated royal dynastic connection. In 1716 Ludwig similarly pointed out that his German–English dictionary was timely (‘an der zeit’), since the ascent of the Hanoverian George I to the throne in 1714 meant English and German people were now ‘würcklich verknüpfft’ (‘really connected’). Édition originale illustrée de deux grandes lettrines historiées. Reliure de l'époque en pleine peau de truie estampée, dos à cinq nerfs muet, grande plaque Renaissance frappée à froid sur les plats contenant une succession d'encadrements à froid, les deux centraux avec des motifs floraux, le suivant avec des médaillons figurant des personnages de profil, puis les vertus (foi, fortune, charité...), enfin une autre frise florale avec des médaillons et des profils. Traces de fermoirs. Trois accrocs sur le dos avec manques. Trous de vers sur le plats supérieur. Restaurations au coin bas droit du plat supérieur, des coins et des fermoirs du second plat. Manques au mors inférieur en queue et tête du plat inférieur. * Les trois ouvrages sont l'uvre de théologiens protestants suisses. Ludwig Lavater travaillait ainsi dans le cercle de son beau-père Heinrich Bullinger, tous deux de Zurich. La Suisse alémanique était alors essentiellement luthérienne, hostile à Genève, et Calvin entreprit un accord majeur pour unifier le protestantisme suisse lequel aboutit au Consensus Tigurinus qui unifia le protestantisme suisse, qui fut signé par Calvin et Bullinger au nom de Zurich. Le rassemblement de ces trois textes théologiques signe symboliquement l'unité du protestantisme suisse en le séparant du luthéranisme. Premier livre de commentaires qui établit une chronique des événements et des généalogies dans les Paralipomènes. Le second livre est une lecture du livre de Daniel par Calvin. ‎Entzückendes Ansichten- und Reisewerk von Schweizer Berglandschaften, gezeichnet und ausgeführt von Lory und Lafond. Komplettes Exemplar in exzellentem Erhaltungszustand und in zartem Originalkolorit. Lediglich die letzte Ansicht trägt die Signatur Zehenders als Zeichner. Dieser schrieb dafür das Vorwort und wohl auch die restlichen Texte (die auch Doyen Bridel zugeschrieben wurden, cf. Lonchamp), welche die besuchten Regionen und Orte kommentieren. Der berühmte Berner Landschaftsmaler und Aquarellist Gabriel Ludwig Lory (Lory père) (1763-1840) und Simon Daniel Lafond (1763-1831), ebenfalls ein Berner Landschaftsmaler, der sich auf geätzte Umrisszeichnungen und deren Kolorierung spezialisierte, begannen um 1787, gemeinsam Kunstblätter, meist vom Berner Oberland, herauszugeben. Dieses Werk entstand nach einer Reise durch das Berner Oberland und die Innerschweiz. Die am Schluss noch beigebundene Tafel mit Miniaturansichten und den „Remarques minéralogiques de Mr Wyttenbach, Pasteur de l’Eglise du St. Esprit à Berne“ war Mandach offensichtlich nicht bekannt. ‎Erste und einzige Ausgabe dieses nur in sehr kleiner Auflage als Privatdruck für die Zürcher Künstlergesellschaft publizierten Werkes. Die Abzüge v.d. Radierungen sind besonders kräftig. Ludwig Hess von Zürich, gefördert von Bodmer und Lavater, “zeigte für die Darstellung des Hochgebirges, welche für die damalige Zeit neu und unerreicht war, besonders Geschick”. Seine Ölbilder, Pastelle und Stiche erlangten einen weitreichenden Ruf und wurden in England geschätzt und gekauft. Sein Atelier galt als Sehenswürdigkeit und wurde von vielen Touristen besucht und beschrieben.Die sechs schönen Radierungen, die Hess wenige Monate vor seinem zu frühen Tod 1799 schuf, stellen dar: 1) Am Lauisser-See (“der eine starke Tagreise von Mailand entfernt liegt” und Hess fährt fort “am lieblichen Salvatorberg”. Schon vorher sagt er “Auf der Höhe, ... sieht man in der italienischen Schweiz noch ein liebliches Dorf, ...”. Diese Bemerkungen vom Künstler, zeigen dass es sich hier um den Luganer See handelt und nicht, wie manchmal behauptet wird, um den Lowerzersee). (Vgl. W.
