In 1768 he was appointed associate professor of Philosophy at the University of Leipzig. From 1771 he was Professor of Greek and Latin. He matriculated a commoner of St. John's College at Oxford in 1734, proceeded B.A. 1738, and M.A. of Christ's College, Cambridge, 1758. He became curate of St. Botolph's, Aldersgate (1741), and afterwards of St. Austin's, and in 1744 was chosen lecturer of St Benedict's, Paul's Wharf. In 1766 Capel Barrow was rector of Rossington, Northamptonshire. His 'A Lapse of Human Souls in a State of Pre-existence, the only Original Sin and the Ground Work of the Gospel Dispensation', published in 1766, is his only book now remembered. Greek and latin text, light stamp on title page margin. Longinus (1st century AD) was a writer, to whom is attributed the above leading work of literary criticism of antiquity ("On Height"). It deals with the high and majestic style of speech in both prose and poetry. The author combines his personal views with a wealth of examples from Homer, Plato, Demosthenes, Sappho and others (even from the Old Testament). The work was already appreciated in its time, and the views expressed in it, many of which were judged to be forerunners of later philological values, played an important role in the literary and aesthetic concerns of modern times. Texte grec de l'ouvrage du philosophe grec Longin, consacré à la question du "Sublime", avec la traduction latine et les commentaires de Tanneguy Le Febvre. ‎Bonne édition bilingue contenant le texte grec suivi de sa traduction latine par Gabriel de Petra, accompagnée des préface, commentaires et notes de Tannegui Lefevre. Marque et devise de l'imprimeur au titre."Le premier texte complet dont nous disposions sur la question du sublime. Lauteur est vraisemblablement un juif hellénisé, platonisant et stoïcien, qui vivait sous le règne de Claude ou de Néron. Malgré plusieurs allusions à la sculpture, la peinture, larchitecture et la musique, louvrage concerne 'le sublime dans le discours', mais déborde le champ de la rhétorique pour couvrir la critique littéraire dans son ensemble, jusquà former une véritable anthologie de la littérature ancienne. Lanalyse littéraire se marie cependant à la philosophie, et lanonyme insiste sur le caractère pratique dune recherche qui est destinée à trouver "par quels moyens nous pourrions amener nos dons naturels à un certain degré délévation" et dont lobjet spécifique est léducation politique (I, 2). Grâce au pseudo-Longin, toute une "hodologie" du sublime se fait jour" (Blandine Saint-Girons).(Brunet, III, 1151).Bon exemplaire. ‎

‎L'attribution du Traité du Sublime à Longin, puis à Denys d'Halicarnasse, est maintenant remise en question. Il s'agirait plutôt d'un auteur inconnu, écrivant sous l'Empire romain, probablement au 1er siècle avant J.-C. On avance les noms d'Hermagoras, d'Aelius Theon ou encore Pompée Geminus. Ce traité est l'un des plus important traités antiques de critique littéraire, avec la Poétique d'Aristote. Il réunit des exemples littéraires, de plus de cinquante auteurs répartis sur plus de 1000 ans, dont certains sont attendus, comme Homère, et d'autre très inhabituels pour cette époque, comme la Genèse. Le Traité du Sublime fut très estimé à partir de la Renaissance et jusqu'à la période Baroque, Boileau en fit même une traduction du grec en français, qui est présente dans le volume (p.258 à p. 344), ainsi que le texte grec et latin. ‎
