Kunsthistoricus Christopher Lloyd onderzocht vanuit een nieuw perspectief Van Goghs werken op papier. Door de tekeningen thematisch te bestuderen - van doordachte figuurstudies over prachtig weergegeven plekken en landschappen tot pakkende portretten - wist hij de successen, mislukkingen, experimenten, beproevingen en teleurstellingen van de kunstenaar vast te leggen. Van Gogh, die voornamelijk autodidact was, benaderde het tekenen instinctmatig, maar zag al snel in hoe belangrijk het was om de grammatica van de kunst te beheersen - anatomie, modeltekenen, verkorting, perspectief - evenals de materialen en technieken, om zo zijn emotionele reacties op een onderwerp zo levendig mogelijk over te brengen. Aan de hand van voorbeelden uit de omvangrijke en beladen familiecorrespondentie van de kunstenaar, schetsboeken en vergelijkende kunstwerken van Dürer, Rembrandt en anderen, biedt dit overzicht ons een beter begrip van waarom de tekenkunst binnen Van Goghs unieke oeuvre zo belangrijk is en ze de intensiteit en reputatie van zijn schilderkunst evenaart. Christopher Lloyd is een Brits kunsthistoricus en was van 1988 tot 2005 'Surveyor of The Queen's Pictures', curator van de schilderijen van de Royal Collection. Hij schreef monografieën over schilders, onder meer Camille Pissarro, officiële museumcatalogi en algemene overzichten van de Britse Royal Collection. Daarnaast organiseerde en cureerde hij tal van tentoonstellingen, en realiseerde hij, in 1992, een zesdelige televisiereeks over de schilderijen in de Royal Collection.‎

Anti Catholic sermon preached at the funeral of Lloyd's parishioner, Sir Edmund Berry Godfrey, the justice of the peace to whom Titus Oates made his first depositions concerning the Popish Plot. Shortly thereafter, he was found mysteriously murdered in a ditch on Primrose Hill. This led to the arrests of several Catholics - and was the beginning of the hysteria of the Popish Plot. En 1891,La Compagnie Maritime P & O a commandé à l'artiste William Whitelock Lloyd des dessins à la plume afin de rendre compte de la vie à bord d'un paquebot P & O pour être vendus aux passagers en "SOUVENIR" de leur voyage. Les croquis ont été faits à bord du paquebot «Himalaya» lors dun voyage de Southampton à l'Inde via le canal de Suez , ceux-ci sont brillamment évocateurs de la vie à bord des paquebots de l'époque. Ils montrent l'agitation à l'embarquement et au départ, les problèmes avec la façon de shabiller, de se restaurer en mer, et la chaleur étouffante qui a conduit à de nombreux passagers a déplaçer leurs matelas pour dormir sur le pont, vue de gibraltar, Malte, la traversée du Canal de Suez, Port Saïd, traversée de la Mer Rouge puis de l'Océan Indien, les Soutiers alimentant la machine à vapeur, les activités de l'équipage sur le pont....etc.... on a affaire là à un livre de Voyage très attrayant, inhabituel et ...TRES RARE.....en bon état malgré le trés léger défaut signalé(good condition in spite of the light defect indicated). bon état ‎

‎Illustré de 6 cartes et 5 plans dépliants en fin de volume. Bien complet. Lloyd (Henry, Humphrey, Evans), aventurier anglais né en 1720, mort à Huy en 1784. Il assista à la bataille de Fontenoy et attira l’attention du Maréchal de Saxe par ses croquis militaires. Après divers avatars, on le retrouve à Londres comme agent secret. Il se distingue en 1747 au siège de berg-op-Zoom comme officier du génie de l’armée française. Il passe ensuite au service de l’Espagne, puis de la Prusse. Il livre en 1754 au gouvernement anglais un plan du Maréchal de Belle-Isle pour une descente en Angleterre. Lloyd sert successivement l’Autriche, Ferdinand de Brunswick, la Prusse et la Russie. Il se fixe enfin en Belgique où il meurt en 1784. ‎
