First edition. In this work De Broglie set forth the idea that electrons, as was previously regarded as particles, also have wave-quaracters, as well as light has. The idea was tested and confirmed by Davisson and Germer the year after in 1927. Also Schrödinger took up the idea and formulated his wave-equation, explaning the stationary states of the electron of Niels Bohr, by applying De Broglie's concept of electrons as waves to the hydrogen atom. ""Thus the duality of both light and matter had been established, and physicists had to come to terms with fundamental particles which defied simple theories and demanded two sets of 'complementary' descriptions, each applicable under certain circumstances, but imcompatible with one another."" First printing of an importent paper in cosmology in which Herschel's by analyzing a large number of stars, believed that he could explain the regularities he observed by assuming that the sun itself was moving toward a point in the consellation of Hercules. ""Just as Copernicus had detroned the earth as the motionless center of the universe, so Herschel detroned the sun.""(Asimov). - In this paper he tries to estimate the speed of the sun's motion. In a memoir published in 1783 Herschel had been occupied with the possibility that the sun was moving relative to the stars. ""More than 20 years later (1805, in the paper offered) Herschel took up the question again, using six of the brightest stars in a collection of the proper motions of 36 published by Maskelyne in 1790, which were much more reliable than any earlier ones, and employing more elaborate processes of calculation" again the apex was placed in the constellation of Hercules, though at a distance of nearly 30 degr. from the position given in 1783. Herschel's results were avowedly to a large extent speculative and were received by contemporary astronomers with a large measure of distrust" but a number of far more elaborate modern investigations of the same subject have confirmed the general correctness of his work.""(Berry ""A Short History of Astronomy"", p. 346.).

The subject of the present publication is the working practices of the Ghent-Bruges illuminators, active in Flanders in the decades around 1500. Its focus is on manuscripts featuring freestanding, isolated motifs painted in the margins of text pages. The author traces how this decorative system was created by the Master of the David Scenes in the Grimani Breviary, a prolific inventor of appealing borders; how it was applied by his closest collaborators, and how it was imitated and adapted by other illuminators. Among these were Simon Bening, the Carmelite sister Cornelia van Wulfschkercke, and a number of anonymous masters, including several whose oeuvres are identified here for the first time. The author elucidates the sources for the isolated motifs and demonstrates how the codicological structure of the manuscripts provides insight into the use and the dispersion of various models for border decorations. The book discusses the famous strewn-flower borders and other types of fully decorated borders as well. The author analyses the isolated motifs in relationship to the page lay-out and the decorative programme of Ghent-Bruges standardised books of hours. The stylistic examination of both the miniatures and the borders of the manuscripts under discussion completes the integrated approach of this study. The author demonstrates how the illuminators collaborated with each other and exchanged artistic models for the illumination of these precious manuscripts. Languages: English.

From 10 October 2009 to 3 January 2010 Museum Het Valkhof will present the miniatures exhibition 'Catherine's world. Devotion, demons and daily life in the 15th century'. Following the successful Limbourg Brothers exhibition in 2005, the museum will now present the most important late medieval manuscript from the Northern Netherlands: the Hours of Catherine of Cleves (c. 1440). This anonymous masterpiece from The Morgan Library and Museum in New York will be disbound for the occasion so that more than 100 pages can be viewed separately in Nijmegen. In addition to pages from the Hours, a large portion of the widespread oeuvre of the Master of Catherine of Cleves will be brought together for the Nijmegen exhibition. Daily life in the Middle Ages will be illustrated by means of medieval costumes and Catherine of Cleves' original household account books. A reduced version of the exhibition will be on show at The Morgan Library and Museum in New York from 5 February to 2 May 2010. New book.

First edition of a main work on the the physiology of the nerves in the lower animals. Loeb founded the theory of ""tropism"" as the basis of the psychology of the lower forms of life and he became the apostle of the mechanistic conceptions in biology.Loeb became one of the most famous scientists in America, widely covered in newspapers and magazines. He was the model for the character of Max Gottlieb in Sinclair Lewis's Pulitzer-winning novel Arrowsmith, the first great work of fiction to idealize and idolize pure science. Mark Twain also wrote an essay titled ""Dr. Loeb's Incredible Discovery"", which urges the reader not to support a rigid general consensus, but instead be open to new scientific advances.Loeb was nominated many times for the Nobel Prize but never won. - Garrison & Morton: 1428.
