‎J'ai lu 2004 222 pages poche. 2004. broche. 222 pages. "Tel l'Homme invisible d'Ellison nous avions disparu dans cette partie du paysage qui refusait de soutenir le rêve américain." Ainsi Lee Stringer ancien sans-abri qui raconte sa lente descente aux enfers de la rue et de la drogue qualifie-t-il ceux qui un jour ont abandonné un mode de vie normatif pour tomber dans l'illusoire liberté d'une existence sans attaches ni contraintes. Le réconfort qui lui permet de lutter contre le froid hivernal (le titre original était Grand Central Winter) et l'indifférence des autres Lee Stringer le cherche pendant douzeans dans sa pipe à crack substance dont il abuse avec l'alcool afin de noyer son désespoir. Sans se livrer aux exactions qui tentent nombre de ses semblables Stringer gagne honnêtement sa vie en vendant les boîtes et canettes vides de sodas qui traînent ça et là. Jusqu'à ce qu'une réforme sociale l'amène à vendre dans les rues de NewYork personnage à part entière ici des exemplaires du journal Street News (dont il deviendra ensuite le rédacteur en chef).Implacables violentes et ironiques à la fois ? un mélange a priori explosif ? les pages hallucinées de ce récit ressortissent d'un constat effrayant: tout un chacun peut un jour démissionner de lui-même abdiquer de la société et se retrouver à l'image de Lee Stringer en quête d'un peu de chaleur et d'argent. De galère en déprime d'humiliations en aliénations multiples Un hiver à NewYork n'est pourtant pas le texte d'un désespéré: celui plutôt d'un homme au parcours aussi noir que sa peau et qui trouvera la rédemption dans l'écriture. À force de vendre les récits des autres Stringer aura en effet la bonne idée d'utiliser le crayon avec lequel il bourra le crack dans sa pipe pour? écrire sur sa condition! Journal intime observation sociologique et miroir autobiographique en même temps ces confessions d'un drogué des annéesquatre-vingt-cinq n'épargnent ni l'American way of life ni les rudes codes de la vie des rues. Le principal défaut des drogués note-t-il in fine c'est "leur incapacité à affronter un monde qui refuse de se plier à l'image d'ordre et de perfection à laquelle nous aspirons tous au fond. ""The discovery of parity nonconservation contributed to a general change in the intellectual climate of fundamental physics, leading to a tendency to question the absolute validity of other conservation laws as well."" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, pp. 318-9). Before 1956, the general belief was that parity conservation is never violated in nature, a firm paradigm that was not challenged until the publication of the present paper. Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics ""for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles"". Lee is the youngest Nobel laureate after WWII. It had earlier been suggested that parity might not be conserved but noone had been able to put forth compelling evidence. A careful review by Lee and Yang went further, showing that while parity conservation had been verified in decays by the strong or electromagnetic interactions, it was untested in the weak interaction. They proposed several possible direct experimental tests.When Lee and Yang's paper appeared in 1956, physicists were not immediately swept away by their ground breaking conclusions. The physicist Freeman Dyson wrote of his reaction to the paper: ""A copy of it was sent to me and I read it. I read it twice. I said, This is very interesting,' or words to that effect. But I had not the imagination to say, By golly, if this is true it opens up a whole new branch of physics.' And I think other physicists, with very few exceptions, at that time were as unimaginative as I."" Wolfgang Pauli wrote to Weisskopf after reading the paper: ""Now after the first shock is over, I begin to collect myself. Yes, it was very dramatic. I am shocked not so much by the fact that the Lord prefers the left hand as by the fact that He still appears to be left-right symmetric when he expresses Himself strongly.""
