‎First printing of Yang and Lee's seminal and topic-creating paper which proved that parity is not conserved in weak interactions. ""The discovery of parity nonconservation contributed to a general change in the intellectual climate of fundamental physics, leading to a tendency to question the absolute validity of other conservation laws as well."" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, pp. 318-9). Before 1956, the general belief was that parity conservation is never violated in nature, a firm paradigm that was not challenged until the publication of the present paper. Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics ""for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles"". Lee is the youngest Nobel laureate after WWII. It had earlier been suggested that parity might not be conserved but noone had been able to put forth compelling evidence. A careful review by Lee and Yang went further, showing that while parity conservation had been verified in decays by the strong or electromagnetic interactions, it was untested in the weak interaction. They proposed several possible direct experimental tests.When Lee and Yang's paper appeared in 1956, physicists were not immediately swept away by their ground breaking conclusions. The physicist Freeman Dyson wrote of his reaction to the paper: ""A copy of it was sent to me and I read it. I read it twice. I said, This is very interesting,' or words to that effect. But I had not the imagination to say, By golly, if this is true it opens up a whole new branch of physics.' And I think other physicists, with very few exceptions, at that time were as unimaginative as I."" Wolfgang Pauli wrote to Weisskopf after reading the paper: ""Now after the first shock is over, I begin to collect myself. Yes, it was very dramatic. I am shocked not so much by the fact that the Lord prefers the left hand as by the fact that He still appears to be left-right symmetric when he expresses Himself strongly."" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, pp. 319).The presented theory paved the way for a reconsideration of physical theories and led to new, far-reaching discoveries regarding the nature of matter and the universe. ‎EDITION ORIGINALE en partie autobiographique du premier livre de l'auteur, publié sous pseudonyme dans cette collection populaire proposant dans un même volume deux textes imprimés tête-bêche. Exemplaire signé par Burroughs sur le titre « William Lee Burroughs». >>>>>>>>>>>>>Après des études à Harvard dont il sort diplômé en 1944, Burroughs devient détective et travaille avec la pègre de New York. Il vit dans un appartement partagé avec Jack Kerouac et Joan Vollmer, une jeune femme brillante, passionnée de littérature et de philosophie qu'il épousera en 1946 et avec qui il aura un fils l'année suivante. C'est à cette période que le groupe, rejoint par Neal Cassady - le futur héros de SUR LA ROUTE - fréquente Herbert Huncke, petit délinquant et prostitué occasionnel avec qui Burroughs commence à consommer de l'héroïne puis de la morphine. Le 6 septembre 1951, en voyage à Mexico, Burroughs, ivre, tue sa femme d'une balle en pleine tête. Inculpé pour homicide involontaire, iI est arrêté et passe un court séjour en prison avant d'être relâché. Burroughs entame alors des années d'errance en Europe et en Amérique du sud, et c'est en rentrant du Mexique, entre deux défonces, qu'il écrit JUNKIE, dont le personnage d'Herman empreinte les traits d'Herbert Huncke. Après de nombreux refus, Allan Ginsberg par l'intermédiaire de Carl Solomon qu'il avait rencontré lors d'un séjour à l'hôpital psychiatrique impose le livre à son oncle, A.A. Wyn, propriétaire d'Ace Books. Cet éditeur qui publiait des livres de poche bon marché, romans policiers ou d'aventure, sort JUNKIE en 1953 sous le pseudonyme de William Lee, le nom de jeune fille de la mère de l'auteur. Malgré cette diffusion populaire, loin des cénacles littéraires négligeant les romans de genre, le livre qui décrit les paradis artificiels trash des bas-fonds de Greenwich Village connut un fort tirage, et ne tarda pas à devenir culte. ‎Rare et charmant petit guide touristique dédié à Plymouth et les villes voisines de Devonport et Stonehouse, aujourd'hui quartiers de Plymouth, dans le comté de Devon, au sud de l'Angleterre. Il a été conçu et publié par George Samuel Lee à Plymouth en 1845. Le guide est composé de deux feuilles : une feuille contenant la description des trois villes, avec toutes les informations utiles aux voyageurs pour Plymouth, à savoir les hôtels et auberges, les banques, les églises et chapelles, les bureaux de poste, les diligences et les bateaux à vapeur. Sur la carte, finement aquarellée à l'époque, sont représentées Plymouth et les villes voisines de Devonport et Stonehouse, qui furent rattachées à Plymouth en 1914. Sur la rive opposée de la rivière Tamar, dans ce qui est aujourd'hui la ville de Cremyll dans les Cornouailles, sont représentés le parc du Mont Edgcumbe et la Edgcumbe House, demeure du XVIe siècle. George Samuel Lee était un graveur, imprimeur et papetier, propriétaire d'un moulin à papier du nom de Tamar Mill, situé au bord de la rivière Tamar à Gunnislake, à quelques kilomètres au nord de Plymouth (Shorter, Studies on the history of papermaking in Britain, 1993, p. 41).
