One of the most significant?and least studied?forms of postwar art collecting in the United States has been the corporate collection. This beautiful book documents one of the most important and widely exhibited of these holdings: the collection of Sara Lee Corporation, fifty-two works selected from the personal collection of Sara Lee?s founder, Nathan Cummings. With major masterpieces ranging from an 1872 painting by Claude Monet to a 1964 bronze by Henry Moore, the Sara Lee Collection was assembled in 1980, five years before Cummings?s death. Since then it has been exhibited in or made loans to many museums throughout the world. In 1998, the corporation announced an unprecedented gift of the entire collection to a group of forty art museums, twenty-five in the United States and fifteen in international cities in which Sara Lee Corporation has a major presence. This Millennium Gift is the largest single gift to the arts in American history and the first to include institutions outside the United States. This book discusses the Nathan Cummings Collection, the Sara Lee Collection, and the Millennium Gift. It also includes an essay on each of the fifty-two works that places the work in the context of the artist?s oeuvre, proposes new interpretations, and discusses the position of the art in the collections of the recipient museums throughout the world. Lavishly illustrated, the book also provides more than 200 comparative photographs.

Designed and conceived to complement In the Picture, his 2011 volume of self-portraits, Lee Friedlander's Family in the Picture is the family album of one of the most restless and inventive figures in the history of photography. The sequence of over 350 pictures begins with images of Friedlander's wife, Maria, at the beginning of their marriage, and interweaves major life events such as births, weddings, and funerals with moments that are less outwardly momentous yet equally moving. Although some of the pictures are well known, the majority of images have only recently been unearthed from Friedlander's personal archive. This compendium of pictures, spanning over a half-century, chronicles the photographer's family with arresting frankness, poignancy, and a moral: that life goes on.

Architecture meets biography, and also meets travel guide in this highly personal exploration of some of the world's most provocative, revealing and beautifully built structures. Jonathan Lee travelled the world and found some truly extraordinary man-made places, from stunning mansions, subterranean auditoria, hotels and churches to bizarre houses and a breathtaking sports ground. He was particularly interested in places that blur the boundary between people and nature.

First printing of Yang and Lee's seminal and topic-creating paper which proved that parity is not conserved in weak interactions. ""The discovery of parity nonconservation contributed to a general change in the intellectual climate of fundamental physics, leading to a tendency to question the absolute validity of other conservation laws as well."" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, pp. 318-9). Before 1956, the general belief was that parity conservation is never violated in nature, a firm paradigm that was not challenged until the publication of the present paper. Chen Ning Yang and Tsung-Dao Lee were awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics ""for their penetrating investigation of the so-called parity laws which has led to important discoveries regarding the elementary particles"". Lee is the youngest Nobel laureate after WWII. It had earlier been suggested that parity might not be conserved but noone had been able to put forth compelling evidence. A careful review by Lee and Yang went further, showing that while parity conservation had been verified in decays by the strong or electromagnetic interactions, it was untested in the weak interaction. They proposed several possible direct experimental tests. When Lee and Yang's paper appeared in 1956, physicists were not immediately swept away by their ground breaking conclusions. The physicist Freeman Dyson wrote of his reaction to the paper: ""A copy of it was sent to me and I read it. I read it twice. I said, This is very interesting,' or words to that effect. But I had not the imagination to say, By golly, if this is true it opens up a whole new branch of physics.' And I think other physicists, with very few exceptions, at that time were as unimaginative as I."" Wolfgang Pauli wrote to Weisskopf after reading the paper: ""Now after the first shock is over, I begin to collect myself. Yes, it was very dramatic. I am shocked not so much by the fact that the Lord prefers the left hand as by the fact that He still appears to be left-right symmetric when he expresses Himself strongly."" (Kragh, Quantum Generations, pp. 319).The presented theory paved the way for a reconsideration of physical theories and led to new, far-reaching discoveries regarding the nature of matter and the universe. The removal of the restrictions imposed by parity law brought order to the theoretical chaos that existed with regard to subatomic particles elementary particles seen in cosmic rays and particle accelerator experiments were understood to be manifestations of the strong and weak nuclear interactions. Eventually the better understanding of their characteristics has led to a more unified theory of the fundamental universal forces of nature.

Pol Bury (1922-2005) was a Belgian painter, sculptor, jewellery designer, writer and graphic artist. He started out as a surrealist painter under the influence of Rene Magritte and Yves Tanguy, and later exhibited with the Jeune Peinture Belge group and the Cobra movement. Around 1953, however, Bury became fascinated by contemporary sculpture, inspired by Alexander Calder, and became one of the protagonists of kinetic art. Characteristic of his work is the extreme slowness of the often unpredictable movements that take place in his sculptures and objects. For the general public Bury is probably best known for his fountains and sculptures in public spaces. With his quirky and innovative work, Pol Bury conquered both the Parisian and New York art worlds, which at the time brought him international recognition. Now this handsome book gives us an opportunity to rediscover the multifaceted oeuvre of Bury - without doubt one of Belgium's most important post-war artists..
