Published in: Transactions of the Linnean Society of London.William Elford Leach (1791-1836) made this fundamental contribution to carcinology in the short time that he was active in zoology (between 1813 and 1821). Leach was also important in introducing the continental ‘’natural system of classification’’ in England, which resulted in a much sounder supraspecific classification. In this paper he does that brillantly for the Crustacea.‎

Hugh Leach, OBE, was an Arabist who spent most of his thirty-six-year career as a soldier and diplomat in the Middle East. He was later a Historian of the Royal Society of Asian Affairs. Upon his death in 2015, the Royal Society's obituary said they considered this book - its centennial history - to be "an outstanding achievement for the Society".‎

‎Avec des textes souvent cités, où l'auteur s'essaie à l'analyse structurale de matériaux bibliques : « La Genèse comme mythe », « La légitimité de Salomon » ; avec d'autres sur la communication non verbale, sur les « Injures et catégories d'animaux », sur la guerre, sur « Cheveux, poils, magie » où il s'attache à distinguer symboles publics et privés, où il prend aussi ses distances avec la psychanalyse ; sur « Les Vierges-mères », sur « Frazer et Malinowski » : voilà un recueil qui apporte la preuve d'une ombrageuse liberté d'esprit, et qui fait mieux connaître en France le maître de Cambridge, l'une des grandes figures de la vie intellectuelle britannique. Malgré une « adhésion nuancée » aux thèses structuralistes, l'auteur s'y montre volontiers empiriste. Il veut voir autre chose que « symbole et signification » dans la façon dont les « primitifs » conçoivent le monde ; car ce monde, ils le modifient aussi. Reste que l'anthropologie ne saurait être une « science naturelle », et que Leach repousse les explications matérialistes sommaires (sociobiologie, déficience alimentaire selon Harris, etc.). Il observe que l'homme n'a cessé de concevoir comme limitée l'unité de son espèce, d'opposer « nous » aux « autres », « nous » aux « monstres ». Mais il affirme que la culture humaine est sans frontières, même si elle est diverse et contrastée. Nous l'observons comme un kaléidoscope de modèles « transformationnels » dont aucun ne peut être considéré en lui-même. ‎
