(1886)

‎L'Équilibre Chimique dans les Systèmes gazeux ou Dissous à L'État dilué.‎

‎Harlem, Les Heritieres Loosjes, 1886. With orig. printed frontwrapper to vol. XX. In ""Archives Néerlandaises des Science Exactes et Naturelles."", Tome XX., 3. issue. Pp. 171-302 (=3. issue). Van't Hoff's paper: pp. 239-302. Clean and fine.‎

‎First appearance of an importent paper in which Van't Hoff ""showed from quantitative experiments on osmosis that dilute solutions of cane sugar obey the laws of Boyle, Gay-Lussac, and particularly leading to an extension of Avogadros law. He here announced the laws which bears his name and which apply to ideal solutions ""solutions which are diluted to such an extent that they are comparable to ideal gases."" Einstein in 1905 and later made importent applications of these laws.""Thus van't Hoff was able to prove that the laws of thermodynamics are valid not only for gases but also for dilute solutuions. His pressure law gave general validity to the electrolytic theory of Arrhenius,,,consequently van't Hoff became an adherent of the theory of electrolytic dissociation.""(DSB XIII, p. 579. In 1901 Van't Hoff was the first to receive the Nobel Prize for chemistry.‎

‎First appearance of these milestone papers on photochemistry, as it was here the opinion ""that only the absorbed light rays are active in the production of chemical changes"", was expressed for the first time and ""thus, he formulated the importent basic law of photochemistry, which is named after him, ""the Grotthuss law of photochemical absorption"" (Eder ""Histo of Photography"" p. 166 ff.). The extracts as offered here, from ""Annalen"" were published before they appeared in the Annalen der Curländischen Gesellschaft für Litteratur und Kunst.""This importent Grutthussian thesis was in time so completely forgotten that John William Draper, two years after the inventionof the daguerreotype, discovered the same law and entirely independently of Grotthuss (1841). For a long time it was known as ""Draper's Law of absorption"" in ignorance of Grotthuss' priority....The four laws of Grotthuss (as formulated in the first paper offered) are....These laws... found little appreciation among his contemporaries...Still we must recognize the fact that the basic ideas which Grotthuss laid down in his photochemical theses were not far removed from the most modern views of physcal chemistry, since the chemical forces of affinity are essentially of an electrical nature"".(Eder opt.cit. p. 168).The volume contains other importent papers Macartney & Tilesius Beobachtungen über leuchtende Thiere"" (4 parts), Chladni, E.F.F. ‎LENZ, E. (HEINRICH FRIEDRICH EMIL.) - ESTABLISHING ELECTROMAGNETIC LAWS.‎

Reference : 47413

(1837)

‎On the Laws according to which the Magnet acts upon a Spiral when it is suddenly approached to or removed from it" and on the most advantageous mode of constructing Spirals for Magneto-electrical purposes.‎

‎(London, Richard and John E. Taylor, 1837) No wrappers. Extracted fron ""Scientific Memoirs, selected from The Transactions of Foreign Academies of Science and Learned Societies. Edited by Richard Taylor."", Vol. I. Pp. 608-630.‎

‎First English edition of Lenz' first importent paper on electromagnetic induction.""Lenz worked out the theoretical and practical aspects of the ballistic method of measuring electrical and magnetic quantities (1832) on the basis of his conception of the instantaneous, impactlike effect of induction current. Employing this method, he was able to make the first quantitative investigation of the induction phenomena themselves. (He established that the induced electromotive force in a coil is the sum of the electromotive force in each turn and does not depend upon the diameter of the turns, the thickness of the wire, or the metal of which it is made.) He also made a quantitative comparison of the resistivity of wire of different metals, established the laws of temperature dependence of resistivity in quadratic form for eight metals, derived the squarelaw variation of the attractive force of electromagnets with the magnetization current (under the conditions of the experiment, the magnetic field was proportional to the magnetic induction), and plotted curves showing the intensity distribution of magnetization along an iron core of a coil of finite length.""(DSB).Lenz was born on February 12, 1804 in Dorpat, and died in Rome on februray 10, 1865. He became professor of physics at the University of St. Petersburg. He investigated the conductivity of many materials for electricity and the effect of temperature on conductivity. he also studied the heat produced by the current and discovered the law which is known by the name of Joule.(Magie ""A Source Book of Physics"" pp.511-13).‎

‎HESS, (GERMAIN HENRY). - HESS' S THERMODYNAMICAL LAWS.‎

(+) Recherches thermoch...‎

‎Paris, Fortin, Masson et Cie, 1840 a. 1842. No wrappers. In ""Annales de Chimie et de Physique"", 2me Series - Tome 75 a. 3e Series - Tome 4.. With titlepage to Tome 75 and orig. printed wrappers to the issue (Septembre issue). Pp. 1-112 a. 1 engraved plate (entire issue offered). With titlepage to Tome 4. Pp. 129-256 (entire Fevrier issue) and pp. 257-384 (entire Mars issue). Hess' papers: pp. 80-103 (tome 75), pp. 211-229 (tome 4), pp. 290-316 (tome 4).‎

‎First appearance in France of Hess' two fundamental laws in thermodynamic 1: ""the law of heat formation"" (1840), anticipating a specific example of the ""LAW OF THE CONSERVATION OF ENERGY"", 2 years before Julius Robert Mayer elucidated the more general principle in 1842 - claiming that ""the heat developed in chemical change is constant, whether the change occurs directly or indirectly in several stages""and 2: ""the law of thermoneutrality"" (1842), stating, that when neutral salts exchange acids and bases in solution, the heat of the reaction is zero. - These papers were published at the same time in France and in Russia. Germain Henri Hess is noted today for two fundamental principles of thermochemistry: the law of constant summation of heat (known simply as Hess's law) and the law of thermoneutrality. These discoveries were remarkable in that they were postulated without any supporting theoretical framework and took place in a field of study almost totally neglected by his contemporaries. Hess's law is of immense practical importance and is used to this day to determine heats of reaction when their direct measurements are difficult or impossible. (Chemistry Encyclopedia).""Numerous men, notably Lavoisier and Laplace had measured the heats evolved in various reactions, but thermochemistry received its first importent advance at the hands ofgermain Henri Hess, who showed that the heat evolved in a reaction is the same regardless of whether the reaction is carried out directly or in a number of steps. This generalization, known now as ""Hess's Law"", makes possible the calculation of heats for many reactions where direct measurement are impracticable.""(Leicester & Klickstein, A Source Book..., p329.""The thermochemical work of Hess was continued extensively in the second half of the nineteenth century through the studies of Thomsen and Berthelot. Both Berthelot’s principle of maximum work and the thermodynamic theories of affinity which came to prevail were clearly foreshadowed in the work of Hess. In addition to his internationally known research in thermochemistry, Hess was very influential in the development of chemistry in Russia. His text Osnovania chistoy khimii (Fundamentals of Pure Chemistry) went through seven editions and did much to establish the chemical nomenclature of the Russian language. He was always interested in technological questions, and many of his students later contributed to Russia’s industrial development."" ‎Loi générale de congélation des dissolvants, Mémoire de... (Extrait par l'auteur). (+) Loi générale des tensions de vapeur des dissolvants. (2 Papers).‎

‎First appearance of Raoult's two importent papers in which described a method for finding the molecular weight of an organic compound by the determination of the lowering of the freezing point of water that resulted from dissolving that compound in water and the law governing the relation between solutes and vapor pressure.""Then in 1882, F.-M. Raoult published his results on the effects of nondissociating organic solutes, from which he deduced a general law controlling the lowering of freezing points (the first paper offered). Four years later he extended this work to show the effect of solutes on vapor pressure (the second paper offered). Having established the effect of nondissociating compounds, he was in position to show that salts produced an eeffect which, though anomalous, could nevertheless be explained by the supposition that a dissolved molecule broke up into other molecules. This work was of great value in supplying a new method for determining molecular weights, since the depression of freezing point and vapor pressure (as well a the related rise in boiling point later discovered) are proportional to the moleculat concentrations ofthe solutions"" it was of equal value in supporting the ideas of van't Hoff on osmotic pressure. With the announcement of the dissociation theory of Arrhenius, the anomalies were explained and the full significance of the generalizations of Raoult was recognized. Raoult published the formulations of his laws in the ""Comptes Rendus"" for 1882 and 1887 (the papers offered)"" (Leicester a. Klickstein ""A Source Book in Chemistry"", pp. 471 ff).‎

‎HERSCHEL, WILLIAM. - INDICATION OF THE UNIVERSALITY OF NEWTON'S LAWS OF MOTION.‎

Reference : 42303

(1803)

‎Account of the Changes that have happened, during the last Twenty-five Years, in the relative Situation of Double-stars" with an Investigation of the Cause to which they are owing. Read June 9, 1803.‎

‎(London, Bulwer and Co., 1803). 4to. Without wrappers as extracted from ""Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London."" Year 1803-Part II. Pp. 339-382 and 2 engraved plates.‎

‎First appearance of a fundamental paper in cosmology and physics as it contains the first observational data to support that Newton's dynamical laws holds outside the solar system. Herschel shows here that the circulating motions of double-stars were under gravitational forces. Until then the validity of the law of gravity was only established within the solar system. Now, a century after the establishment of the law, it was traced out in the motion of incredibly distant stars and the theory first truly earned its title of Universal. The exact proof of the mutual gravitation of the double-stars was only obtained five years after Herschel's death, when the motions of the stars were more precisely dtermined. One of the most notable of Herschel's discoveries of double-stars, binary stars. A first cataloque of such pairs was published early in 1782 and contained 269, of which 227 were new discoveries. ""Twenty years after the publication of his first cataloque Herschel was of Michell's opinion - Michell had expressed the opinion that the odds in favour of a physical relation between the members of herschel's newly discovered double stars were ""beyond arithmetic"" - but was able to support it by evidence of an entirely novel and much more direct character. A series of observations of Castor, presented in two papers in the ""Philosophical Transaction"" in 1803 (the paper offered here) and 1804, which were fortunately supplemented by an observation of Bradley's in 1759, had shewn a progressive alteration in the direction of the line joining its two components, of such a character as to leave no doubt that the two stars were revolving round one another"" and there were five oher cases in which a similar motion was observed...it was shown that the double-star was really formed by a connected pair of stars near enough to influence one another's mortion.""(Berry in ""A Short History of Astronomy"" pp. 342-43).‎

‎First appearance of Fick's importent paper in molecular physics in which he annouced his two laws of diffusion.Fick's first law relates the diffusive flux to the concentration field, by postulating that the flux goes from regions of high oncentration to regions of low concentration, with a magnitude that is proportional to the concentration gradient (spatial derivative). - Fick's second law predicts how diffusion causes the concentration field to change with time. (Wikipedia).First appearance of HELMHOLTZ'S fundamental paper in physiological optics in which he examined the sensitivity of the eye for the individual elements of the violet end of the spectrum" he was able to detect a whole series of distinct tones of purple: he alters the name 'invisible rays' to that of 'ultra-violet rays'" discussion of the relations of the wavelenghts of complementary colours and the intensity required if the mixture of simple complementarity colours is to produce white. He answered these questions quantatively. ""THE TREATISE (the paper offered), WHICH HAS BEEN FUNDAMENTAL FOR ALL LATER WORK OF THE SAME KIND, concludes with an inquiry into the validity of Newton's Colour Circle, which Helmholtz designates as one of the most brilliant inspirations of that great thinker.""(Leo Koenigsberge ""Hermann von Helmholtz"" pp. 131-133).‎

This French announcement was published 4 days before his longer paper ""Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Hybride"", in which Mendel is mentioned.De Vries completed most of his hybridization experiments without knowing about Mendel's work. Based on his own results, de Vries drew the same conclusions as Mendel. De Vries published his work in 1900, first in French then in German. In the French report there was no mention of Mendel, but this was amended by de Vries in the German paper. It is possible that de Vries read Mendel's paper before he published his own, and included Mendel's name in the later printing when he realized that other people also knew about Mendel's work. De Vries may have thought that his own conclusions were superior to Mendel's. ""During the 1880s, de Vries became interested in heredity. In 1889 he published Intracellular Pangenesis, in which he critically reviewed previous research on inheritance and advanced the theory that elements in the nucleus, ‘pangenes’, determine hereditary traits.

Laplace's paper: pp. 274-285.‎

‎First apperance in German of these importent papers on the refraction and double refraction of light. The papers by Malus is his first two papers on the refraction of light and Laplace's paper is the memoir in which he commented Malus' paper and Huygen's refraction law. ""In 1788 Haüy found experimentally that Huygen's law was true only in certain special cases, but in 1802 Wollaston found experimental evidence for the Huygenian construction (the second Wollaston paper offered). In ´""Mémoire sur la mesure du pouvoir réfringent"" (the first paper offered) Malus showed that Wollaston's experiments were incomplete, and so the French corpuscularian physicists did not trust Wollaston's results. They thought, moreover, that Wollaston was associated with Tmomas Young and therfore with the new wave hypothesis. In this situation the Institute on January 1808 proposed a prize which required an experimental and theoretical explanation of double refraction. The French ""Newtonian"" scientists hoped that Malus would find a precise and general law for double refraction within the framework of an emission theory of light. Malus was a skilled mathematician and during 1807 he had carried out experiments on double refraction. By december 1808 Malus had finished his experimental investigations, which verified the Huygenian law. What remained was a theoretical deduction of the law. In January 1809, Laplace published a memoir in which he deduced Huygen's law law within the framework of Newtonian mechanics, using the principle of least action, and Malus considered this an insolence which deprived him of the priority. In 1810 Malus von the prize for his ""Théorie sur la double réfraction"", published in 1811.""(DSB IX, p. 73).‎

‎First appearance in English of a classic paper in the investigations of chemical reactions produced by lightrays. Their joined work - from 1855-59 - founded scientific photochemistry, by determining the phenomena of induction, deduction and extinction. They found that the beginning of light reaction takes place at first very slowly and that the velocity increases gradually until it attains a constant value, observing also that steam accelerates the action and that air retards it. They also gave proofs of the ""Law of Reciprocity‎
