‎Surtout connu pour sa traduction des Vies de Plutarque (en collaboration avec son frère William Langhorne), le poète John Langhorne (1735-1779) s'essaya aussi à la fiction. Il composa deux recueils de lettres imaginaires échangées entre Theodosius et Constantia, deux personnages apparus sous la plume de Joseph Addison (1672-1719) en 1711 (numéro 164 du Spectator).
