Het is bijna niet voor te stellen dat een Catalaanse reiziger in de hoge middeleeuwen bij het bezoeken van een plattelandskerk in Noorwegen geen enkele moeite zou hebben gehad om de misviering bij te wonen en te begrijpen. De liturgie en aankleding van het altaar waren in heel West-Europa gelijk. Er was in de periode 1100-1350 een opvallende religieuze en culturele eenheid in heel West-Europa.
